Graphic Design Intern — Fall 2026

About the Job

Books-A-Million is looking for a Graphic Design Intern to join our Marketing team this fall at our Birmingham, AL headquarters. This is an on-site, part-time internship supporting the Creative/Design team. The intern will assist with entry-level design projects — web banners, email graphics, templates, print work, and social media. This is a great opportunity for a student early in their design career to build real, portfolio-ready experience in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Role Summary

The Graphic Design Intern supports BAM's Creative/Design team by taking on entry-level design work, supporting the design team on high-priority projects. The role is a chance to learn on the job — applying classroom design skills to real marketing materials, receiving hands-on feedback, and building a portfolio along the way. The intern will work closely with the Creative team and collaborate with broader Marketing on store-visit content needs. The environment is collaborative and fast-paced, with room to grow and ask questions.

Role Responsibilities

Design Support

  • Help create web banners, email graphics, templates, print work, and social media content across all four of BAM’s brands (BAM!, 2nd & Charles, Joe Muggs, and Yogurt Mountain)
  • Learn to apply typography and brand guidelines to marketing materials
  • Support the Creative team with day-to-day design requests

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with the Creative team on active projects
  • Support local store visits for social content shoots

Learning & Development

  • Build a growing portfolio of real, published design work
  • Present a final project recap to leadership at the end of the internship

Role Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Graphic Design or a related field (rising junior or senior preferred)
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom)
  • Interest in typography, layout, and visual brand consistency
  • Strong attention to detail and openness to feedback
  • Reliable and organized, with the ability to manage a few small projects at once

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior design experience of any kind — school projects, freelance work, or a part-time job — is a nice plus, but not required
  • Familiarity with photo/video content or social platforms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube) is a bonus

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Location: On-site at Birmingham, AL headquarters
  • Schedule: Part-time, up to 30 hours/week depending on class schedule (flexible — full days or half days available)
  • Program Length: Approximately 12 weeks, September 21 – mid-December 2026
  • Travel: Minimal; occasional local store visits for content shoots

The Perks

As a BAM intern, you'll get more than just work experience — you'll get real mentorship and a foot in the door:

Compensation: $15/hour

Mentorship: Hands-on coaching and feedback from BAM's Creative team

Portfolio-Building: Real, published design work you can showcase after the internship

Leadership Exposure: Opportunity to present your work to BAM leadership

Employee Discount: Enjoy discounts on books and other products across our stores
