Job description

Description:

The Grain Originator is responsible for originating, purchasing, and positioning grain to maximize company profitability while managing risk and maintaining strong customer relationships at all Premier Companies grain locations. This role plays a key part in the coordination between farmers, end-users, transportation partners, and internal operations to ensure an efficient grain flow from origin to destination.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Originate grain purchases directly from producers and manage relationships with local farmers.
  • Negotiate pricing, contract terms, and delivery schedules.
  • Manage hedge positions and grain ownership using futures, options, and cash markets.
  • Monitor market conditions and farm marketing strategies.
  • Assist Merchandiser in analyzing basis, spreads, freight, and carry opportunities.
  • Execute and administer grain contracts accurately and in compliance with company policies.
  • Assist in pricing programs and risk management strategies.
  • Collaborate with operations staff to ensure efficient shipment scheduling and grain movement.
  • Maintain accurate records and provide regular reporting on positions, margins, inventories, and forecasts.
  • Participate in industry trade activities and customer outreach efforts.
  • Ensure compliance with all company safety policies and regulatory requirements.


Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Business, or related field preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in grain merchandising, grain origination, or grain trading preferred but not mandatory.
  • Strong understanding of futures markets, basis trading, and risk management.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and grain management software systems.
  • Ability to analyze data and markets to make sound business decisions.
  • Must be highly organized with strong attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel locally to meet with producers and customers.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Physical & Work Requirements
