About the role

DNV Power Systems’ Advisory group is seeking a Principal Power System Engineer focused on EMT Studies in the Renewables & Power Grids group. The role is based at our Toronto or Montreal offices with a dynamic hybrid schedule (approximately three days per week from office or client location). This position may also be considered at other Canadian DNV offices.

What You'll Do

Project and Program Leadership:

  • Coordinate, plan, and resource multiple projects, ensuring timely completion and adherence to budgetary constraints.
  • Coordinate EMT projects to align with business goals and client objectives.
  • Collaborate with department leadership on projects and programs.
  • Engage with cross‑disciplinary experts to provide holistic client solutions.
  • Promote and monitor the team’s compliance with DNV quality standards.
  • Author, review, or approve project proposals and deliverables.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts (tool development, process refinement, digitization).
  • Mentor team members.

Client Management:

  • Develop a deep understanding of specific client needs, expectations, and challenges, particularly with key accounts in onshore wind, offshore wind, solar, battery storage, and transmission line technologies.
  • Adapt approach to align with specific client requirements, ensuring tailored solutions.
  • Standardize risk contextualization for client and internal consumption.

Technical Expertise:

  • Maintain and continually enhance deep domain knowledge in EMT Studies (SSR, SSCI, ferro‑resonance, TOV, SOV, TRV, harmonic, energization, stability).
  • Hands‑on experience with PSCAD.
  • Provide clients with actionable insights and recommendations that contribute to business improvement.
  • Advance team and industry thought leadership.

Business Development:

  • Identify synergies for customers across renewable modalities.
  • Identify new business opportunities, interpret market trends, and expand the client base.
  • Engage in networking and relationship‑building activities focused on strategic clients.
  • Author, review, and approve project proposals.
About youWhat is Required
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience, including:
  • In-depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems, renewable energy, and EMT studies.
  • Hands‑on experience with power‑system tools PSS/E, TARA, PSLF, Power‑world, and PSCAD.
  • Direct work experience in transmission and/or distribution planning related analyses in transmission planning and/or resource interconnection.
  • Knowledge of North American RTO/ISO markets, grid interconnection, and corresponding planning practices (NERC standards, ISO/RTO resource interconnection model requirements).
  • Experience in driving strategy and implementing business plans.
  • Experience in the context of engineering, estimation, construction, development, origination, consulting, project management, technology, asset management, or finance.
  • Business development experience.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team environment and collaborate with clients and team members on project schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Valid driver's license with ability to rent and drive a car and use public transport as needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English (requirement for drafting internal documents in North America).
  • Background screening conducted.
What is Preferred
  • Active Professional Engineering License.
  • Graduate level degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems – EMT studies.
  • Hands‑on experience with power system analysis software packages (PSS/E, TSAT, TARA, ASPEN, PSLF, CYME, ETAP, Synergie Electric, Digi Silent, EMTP‑RV, AutoCAD/Autodesk).
  • Track record of project management and/or completion of project management related training.
  • Minimum eight (8+) years of experience in resource interconnection working with a consultant performing studies in resource planning, generation interconnection, transmission planning, grid resiliency, and EMT studies with ISO, utility firms, or renewable energy development companies.
  • Working knowledge of automation scripts (Python).
  • Experience performing one or more of the studies (Power flow, Transient Stability, Resource planning, forward‑looking analysis, SCED).
