Job description

This application is for graduate students pursuing a practicum (externship) experience in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) within the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD). The practicum provides an opportunity for the student to develop clinical skills under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist while working within a large urban school district setting.

The graduate student’s practicum in the Dallas Independent School District provides a valuable opportunity for hands-on learning and skill development in the field of speech-language pathology. By adhering to the roles, responsibilities, and expectations outlined in this document, the student will contribute meaningfully to the district’s efforts in supporting students with speech and language needs, while gaining professional experience that will support their future career.
 

Responsibilities

The graduate student will be expected to assist in the following key areas during their practicum:

Therapy Services:

Provide support in the delivery of direct therapy services to students with speech and language disorders.

Assist in planning and implementing individualized treatment plans under the guidance of the supervisor.

Conduct group and individual therapy sessions based on student needs and established goals.

Document progress and maintain records for each student served.

Evaluation of Students:

Assist in conducting speech and language evaluations, including assessments of articulation, language, voice, fluency, and social communication skills.

Gather and record data during formal and informal evaluations and provide input into the evaluation process.

Participate in report writing and interpretation of assessment results, working with the supervisor to determine the best course of action for student support.

Consultation Services:

Work closely with teachers, parents, and other school professionals to provide consultation regarding speech and language development and assist in developing strategies to support students in the classroom.

Offer recommendations to teachers and parents on how to implement speech and language strategies for students in both the school and home settings.

Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress and concerns.

ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) Meetings:

Provide input during ARD meetings for students receiving special education services, contributing to the development of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

Assist in setting appropriate speech and language goals and monitor the progress of students as outlined in their IEPs.

Ensure clear and effective communication of student progress to the ARD committee.

Prerequisites: Before beginning the practicum, the graduate student is required to:

  • Complete the Practicum Public Agreement between Dallas ISD and the University
  • Sign a data-sharing agreement to comply with privacy regulations and ensure confidentiality in the handling of student data.
  • Complete a background check and fingerprinting as mandated by Dallas ISD
