What is a graduate software developer?

A Graduate Software Developer is an entry-level role for recent graduates in computer science or related fields. They work as part of a development team to design, develop, test, and maintain software applications. Typical responsibilities include writing code, debugging, collaborating with senior developers, and learning best practices. This role provides hands-on experience and helps graduates build technical and problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate software developer?

To thrive as a Graduate Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, as well as a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with version control systems like Git, software development frameworks, and familiarity with operating systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and eagerness to learn make candidates stand out. These competencies are crucial for contributing to projects, adapting to fast-changing technologies, and working efficiently within collaborative development teams.

What are typical career progression opportunities for a graduate software developer?

Graduate Software Developers often start by working closely with experienced team members on code development, bug fixing, and testing. As you gain experience and demonstrate your abilities, you can move into roles such as Software Developer, Senior Developer, or even into specialized areas like DevOps, QA, or front-end/back-end development. Many companies offer mentorship, training, and clear advancement paths, allowing motivated graduates to progress quickly. Additionally, early exposure to collaborative projects and agile methodologies will help build the foundation for leadership or technical expert positions over time.

How to become a software developer graduate after graduation?

To become a software developer graduate, focus on completing a relevant degree such as computer science or software engineering, and develop programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or C++. Gaining practical experience through internships, personal projects, or coding bootcamps can enhance employability, and obtaining certifications like Microsoft or AWS can also be beneficial.

Job description

Requisition ID: 100966

Job Category: Engineering

Location: Calgary, AB, Canada

Join a company that is passionately committed to the pursuit of a better world through positive change. With more than 70 years of business and technical expertise in mining, energy, and infrastructure, our 10,000 colleagues in 150 countries tirelessly work toward bettering the industries in which we operate. With practical solutions that are safe, innovative and sustainable, we think globally while acting locally. Are you looking for an opportunity to join a diverse group of professionals who are committed to remaining exceptional? We look forward to hearing from you.

If it isn't grown, it's mined. Our mining and metals teams help our clients to safely and sustainably mine the minerals and metals used in our everyday lives. Want to play a part of innovating and optimizing the mining life cycle on greenfield and brownfield facilities? Apply today!

Hatch is committed to providing a complete array of engineering services to the mining and metals sector. Mine waste and mine closure management, together with mine water management, is an ever-increasingly complex subject for the industry. Hatch employs an integrated approach from the moment mine waste is generated to the point where it needs to be finally contained. This is done by considering all mining aspects including dewatering processes, transport and storage components, and the closure design of mine waste and refining residue facilities. In doing so, we are dedicated to projecting a holistic vision to tailings and mine and metallurgical waste streams management. We do this by finding the most integrated and innovative solutions to de-risk the industry. We build strong teams. As such, we will continue to look for innovative solutions, bringing together geotechnical, hydrotechnical, process engineers, geochemists practitioners, and other SMEs into the tailings practice, all with a clear and dedicated focus to find ways to manage, reduce, and/or repurpose tailings and mine waste.

The Tailings, Mine Waste and Mine Closure (Tailings) Practice group at Hatch is seeking to hire a Senior level, Geotechnical Tailings Engineer to become a practitioner in the field and part of our expanding team in Calgary, Canada. This role would suit a highly motivated professional with a strong technical focus, who is interested in supporting the development of the practice and expanding the capability within the North American cluster of an existing multidisciplinary practice group of specialists in tailings and mine waste management field made of geotechnical, hydrotechnical, mining, geoscientists, and process engineers around the world.  Reporting will be to the Tailings Practice Lead in Canada, which in turn report to the Global Practice Director in the Tailings Practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out a tailings storage facility design project by completing and/or guiding the required geotechnical engineering analysis and coordinating a multi-discipline team. The study level can range from conceptual, pre-feasibility, feasibility, detailed engineering or construction.
  • Prepare and review trade-off studies, feasibility to detailed engineering studies, engineering reports, drawings and specifications for mine waste disposal.
  • Support the team in identifying and solving geotechnical issues. A common example for a practitioner with geotechnical engineering background is to have a reasoned insight of settlements, liquefaction potential, slope stabilization, pore pressure generation, excavation and backfilling procedures, and related problems.
  • Be able to carry out slope stability and seepage analysis and understand contractive (liquefaction) behavior under static and earthquake loading scenarios. Proficient in geotechnical modeling software, such as SLOPE/W, SEEP/W and SIGMA/W. Support the team in coordinating geotechnical models of tailings storage facilities, especially with limit equilibrium and dynamic deformation under a variety of loading conditions.
  • Develop and manage field and laboratory investigation programs to support the design of tailings storage facilities.
  • Develop and manage geotechnical instrumentation monitoring programs.
  • Support field operations through supervision, troubleshooting and monitoring. A practitioner with geotechnical engineering background would require experience in drilling, carrying out and understanding in situ tests, piezocone soundings, reconnaissance trenches, as well as tailings storage facility construction, subgrade compaction assessment, and installation of geosynthetics, etc.
  • Prepare and review proposals including cost estimates using Hatchโ€™s internal proposal software system
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers
