How much do graduate nursing assistant jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 2, 2026, the average hourly pay for graduate nursing assistant in the United States is $19.55, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $21.39 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Graduate Nursing Assistants?

Graduate Nursing Assistants (GNAs) are individuals who have completed a state-approved nursing assistant training program and passed the competency evaluation exam, qualifying them to provide basic patient care under the supervision of registered nurses or licensed practical nurses. GNAs assist patients with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, feeding, and mobility. They also play a key role in monitoring vital signs and reporting changes in patient conditions to the nursing staff. In some states, the title 'Graduate Nursing Assistant' may be used interchangeably with Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), but GNAs are typically recent graduates awaiting certification or licensure.

Can you make $100,000 as a CNA?

As a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), earning $100,000 annually is uncommon and typically not achievable through standard full-time work alone. Most CNAs earn between $25,000 and $40,000 per year, though higher salaries may be possible with overtime, working in high-paying regions, or advancing to roles with additional responsibilities or certifications. Increasing income often requires gaining experience, additional training, or transitioning into specialized healthcare positions.

Why do so many CNAs quit?

Many CNAs quit due to low pay, physically demanding work, high stress levels, and limited opportunities for advancement. The job often involves long shifts, emotional strain, and inadequate staffing, which can lead to burnout and turnover.

What is the highest paid nursing assistant?

The highest paid nursing assistants typically work in specialized settings such as long-term care facilities, hospitals, or home health care, and may earn higher wages with additional certifications or experience. Salaries can vary by region, but advanced skills and certifications can lead to increased pay for nursing assistants. Generally, experienced nursing assistants in high-demand areas earn the most within the role.

What are some common challenges Graduate Nursing Assistants face when transitioning from training to working in a clinical environment?

Graduate Nursing Assistants often find the transition from classroom learning to hands-on clinical work both exciting and challenging. Adapting to the fast-paced environment, managing multiple patient needs, and effectively communicating with interdisciplinary teams can be initially overwhelming. However, most healthcare facilities provide orientation programs and mentorship to support new assistants. Building confidence and proficiency comes with experience, and seeking feedback from more experienced colleagues can ease the adjustment process.

Can a CNA make $1000 a week?

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) typically earn between $10 and $20 per hour, depending on location and experience, which generally results in weekly earnings below $1000 for full-time work. Achieving $1000 a week would usually require working overtime, multiple jobs, or in high-paying regions, but it is not common for standard CNA roles to reach that level without additional factors. Certifications and experience can influence pay, but most CNAs do not earn that amount regularly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graduate Nursing Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Nursing Assistant, you need foundational knowledge of basic patient care, vital signs monitoring, and infection control, usually gained through a nursing assistant training program or certification (such as CNA). Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and common clinical equipment is essential. Strong communication, teamwork, and compassion help you support patients and collaborate effectively with healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for delivering safe, patient-centered care and ensuring smooth daily operations in healthcare environments.
