What does a graduate mechanical engineer do?

A Graduate Mechanical Engineer is an entry-level professional who applies principles of mechanical engineering to design, analyze, and improve mechanical systems. They often work under the supervision of senior engineers, assisting with tasks such as drafting technical drawings, modeling prototypes, conducting tests, and solving engineering problems. Their responsibilities may also include collaborating with other departments, preparing reports, and learning industry standards. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and training for recent graduates starting their engineering careers.

What are some typical projects or tasks a graduate mechanical engineer can expect in their first year?

As a Graduate Mechanical Engineer, you will likely be involved in a variety of projects ranging from assisting in the design and analysis of mechanical components to preparing technical documentation and performing simulations. You may work closely with senior engineers on tasks such as creating 3D models, running tests on prototypes, and supporting product development meetings. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as manufacturing and quality assurance, is common, helping you gain a holistic understanding of the product lifecycle. This hands-on exposure is designed to build your technical skills and prepare you for increased responsibilities as you progress in your career.

What are jobs for a recent mechanical engineer graduate?

As a recent mechanical engineer graduate, you can find entry-level jobs in your field in a variety of positions that focus on helping design and develop the technical specifications for various products. In one of these roles, you get more hands-on experience than you do as a student. You help senior engineers on a project and utilize math and measuring skills to help design new machines. Some details of this job vary by employer. For example, some employers may have you focus on repairing existing devices to learn more about the ins and outs of the product they create, while others may have you focus on assisting senior-level engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), finite element analysis tools, and industry standards is typically required. Strong teamwork, communication skills, and adaptability help you collaborate effectively and learn quickly in dynamic environments. These skills ensure you can contribute to innovative design solutions, meet project requirements, and advance in your engineering career.

What is the difference between Graduate Mechanical Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectGraduate Mechanical EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; entry-levelBachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering; some experience preferred
Work EnvironmentInternships, training programs, entry-level projectsDesign offices, engineering teams, project-based work
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in projects, learning design processes, basic analysisCreating and analyzing mechanical designs, CAD modeling, prototyping

While both roles require a background in mechanical engineering, a Graduate Mechanical Engineer is typically an entry-level position focused on learning and supporting projects. A Mechanical Design Engineer, on the other hand, is more specialized in designing and analyzing mechanical components and systems, often requiring some prior experience or advanced skills. Both roles are essential in the engineering industry, with the design engineer position generally involving more technical responsibility.

Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Drafter

Job Description

This role focuses on creating accurate production and assembly drawings using SolidWorks based on models developed by equipment designers and engineers. The Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Drafter supports the full product lifecycle by translating design concepts into detailed, manufacturable documentation, coordinating closely with engineering, manufacturing, and procurement teams. Some 3D modeling and design work may be involved, so a solid understanding of mechanical design concepts and drafting practices is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare detailed production and assembly drawings using computer-aided drafting tools, primarily SolidWorks, based on models created by equipment designers and engineers.
  • Translate engineering concepts and models into clear, accurate, and manufacturable drawings and documentation.
  • Perform some 3D modeling and design work in SolidWorks as needed, applying sound mechanical design principles.
  • Create, update, and maintain bills of material (BOMs) within the ERP system to ensure accurate manufacturing and procurement information.
  • Use SolidWorks Vault or Vault PDM to manage CAD files, revisions, and engineering documentation in a controlled and organized manner.
  • Assist with and process engineering change orders, ensuring that drawings, models, and documentation reflect the latest approved design changes.
  • Collaborate with engineers, manufacturing personnel, and other team members to clarify design intent and resolve drafting or design issues.
  • Coordinate with procurement to communicate and clarify equipment and component requirements for the products being designed.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and other CAD tools as needed to support drafting and design tasks.
  • Visit the production floor periodically to review in-process products, verify that manufactured parts align with drawings, and address any issues identified by shop personnel.
  • Support manufacturing by providing clear documentation and promptly addressing questions related to drawings and design details.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, clarity, and consistency in all drawings, models, and documentation.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for mechanical drafting and 3D modeling.
  • Strong mechanical design and drafting skills with an understanding of mechanical concepts and practices.
  • Experience creating detailed production and assembly drawings for manufacturing.
  • Ability to work with bills of material (BOMs) and integrate them with an ERP system.
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks Vault or Vault PDM for CAD data management.
  • Experience with engineering change orders and revising drawings and documentation accordingly.
  • Working knowledge of CAD tools such as AutoCAD in addition to SolidWorks.
  • Understanding of manufacturing environments and processes, and how they relate to mechanical design and drafting.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with engineers, manufacturing, and procurement teams.
  • For Designer 1: Associate degree in drafting and design or a mechanical engineering degree; can be a new graduate with a drafting and design degree or a four-year mechanical engineering degree.
  • For Designer 2: At least 2 years of experience using SolidWorks and at least 1 year of experience working in a manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Education in drafting and design or mechanical engineering, providing a strong foundation in mechanical principles and technical drawing.
  • Experience working with ERP systems for managing bills of material and related manufacturing data.
  • Background in an engineering or manufacturing setting, supporting cross-functional collaboration.
  • Ability to manage multiple design and drafting tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing CAD files, revisions, and documentation within PDM systems.
  • Motivation to contribute to company performance and benefit from a bonus structure tied to achieving organizational goals and milestones.

Work Environment

This position is primarily office-based, working within a design and engineering environment that relies heavily on SolidWorks and other CAD tools. The Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Drafter collaborates closely with engineers and other technical staff, frequently coordinating with procurement to ensure the correct equipment and components are specified for each project. The role involves regular use of SolidWorks Vault or Vault PDM and ERP systems to manage design data and bills of material. In addition to office work, the designer periodically visits the production floor to observe products in progress, verify that manufactured parts match the drawings, and address any design-related questions from shop personnel. The organization offers a performance-based bonus structure tied to achieving company goals and milestones, contributing to a results-oriented and collaborative culture.
