In summary, a Graduate Internship is a temporary, training-oriented role aimed at gaining experience, while an Entry-Level Position is a more permanent role where the employee performs specific job duties with greater independence.

How does a graduate internship typically support professional development and future career prospects?

A graduate internship provides hands-on experience in your field of study, allowing you to apply academic knowledge to real-world projects. Interns often work closely with experienced professionals, participate in team meetings, and contribute to meaningful assignments, which helps build practical skills and professional networks. These internships can also lead to full-time job offers or serve as strong references for future job applications, significantly enhancing your career trajectory. Additionally, you'll gain insight into workplace culture and industry expectations, making the transition from student to professional smoother.

Is it possible to get a graduate internship?

Yes, graduate internships are available for recent graduates and often require relevant coursework, skills, or certifications. They provide practical experience in a specific field and typically have application deadlines and eligibility criteria set by employers or organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Intern, you typically need a relevant academic background, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and a willingness to learn. Familiarity with industry-specific software, productivity tools like Microsoft Office, and sometimes basic programming or data analysis tools can be advantageous. Proactive communication, adaptability, and teamwork are standout soft skills that enhance your ability to contribute and grow. These skills and qualities are crucial as they enable interns to quickly integrate, maximize learning, and add value to the organization.

What is a graduate internship?

A graduate internship is a temporary, practical work experience opportunity offered to recent graduates or students who have completed their undergraduate or postgraduate studies. It allows individuals to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field, develop professional skills, and build a network of industry contacts. Graduate internships can last from a few months to a year and may lead to full-time job offers upon successful completion. Employers benefit by evaluating potential hires in a real-world setting, while interns gain valuable insights into their careers of interest.

Master Level Internship - Social Work

Frontier Behavioral Health

Spokane, WA

Job description

Frontier Behavioral Health's presence in Spokane is more than 100 years strong, allowing our non-profit organization to understand the varied needs of our clients and the larger community. Our programs are designed to provide evidence-based treatment to adults, youth and seniors who are dealing with a wide range of behavioral health issues. As a Trauma-Informed Care Organization, we firmly believe in recovery and that our clients can lead fulfilling and meaningful lives, and we consider it an honor and a privilege to assist them in their journey. If you want to have a positive impact in the lives of others come join us!

WHY CHOOSE FRONTIER BEHAVIORAL HEALTH?

  • At Frontier Behavioral Health, we value our employees and recognize the importance of EVERY employee's contribution to our mission.

  • Our behavioral health services make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve and contribute to the health, safety, and quality of life for everyone in Spokane County.

  • At FBH we have a variety of client services, including outpatient, inpatient, community outreach, crisis services, partnerships with schools, law enforcement and more.

  • Our evidence-based, culturally appropriate, trauma informed behavioral health services address the diverse needs of those we serve.

Given the use of the "clinician model" at FBH (combination of counseling and, as needed, case management), FBH is well-suited as a placement for MSW interns. We take MSW interns for foundation practicum, advanced practicum, or both. Interns are placed in a program within FBH that matches their interest (e.g., counseling children/teens, adults, crisis work, etc), but are also exposed to the broad variety of community behavioral health care through being able to shadow staff in programs other than the one in which the intern is placed. As an agency that employs trauma-informed care, the recovery model, and integrative/collaborative care elements, the MSW internship at FBH immerses the intern in cutting edge models of practice, making the graduate well-suited for employment in a variety of settings.

During this internship, you will have the opportunity to do the following:

  • Develop clinical caseload of up to 12 individual clients, plus group(s).

  • Will shadow staff in programs other than the one the intern is assigned to.

  • Learn collaborative documentation methods.

  • Participate in staff meetings, clinical case staffings, etc.

  • Develop skills for professional practice, and develop "a sense of oneself" as a practitioner.

  • Participate in monthly intern seminars which introduce the interns to topics pertinent to contemporary social work and community behavioral health practice (integrated services, trauma-informed care, ethical dilemmas, etc).

  • Weekly supervision is provided by a qualified supervisor.

Requirements for Internship Applicants:

  • Simultaneous enrollment in a CSWE-accredited graduate social work program.

  • Successful completion of a background check.

  • Attend in-person orientation.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • All internships at FBH are unpaid. This internship qualifies for a nominal monthly stipend.

  • Monthly stipend not available to employees who are doing their internship while currently employed at FBH.

  • Additionally, Internships at Frontier Behavioral Health are not eligible for benefits or a sign-on bonus.

Below is our benefit information that you may want to review if you are interested in employment once you complete your degree. We love to hire our interns!
