What is the difference between Graduate Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectGraduate EngineeringMechanical Engineering
QualificationsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related fieldRequires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, often with licensure options
Work EnvironmentEntry-level roles in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, and technologyDesign, analysis, and manufacturing in industries like automotive, aerospace, and energy
Employer UsageEmployers hire graduate engineers for training and development programsEmployers seek mechanical engineers for product design, testing, and maintenance

Graduate Engineering is an entry-level role for those with an engineering degree, often across multiple disciplines, while Mechanical Engineering is a specialized field focusing on designing and manufacturing mechanical systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in focus and career paths.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Graduate Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Engineer, you typically need a degree in engineering, strong analytical abilities, and a solid grasp of engineering principles. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, MATLAB, or SolidWorks, as well as any relevant certifications, is highly beneficial. Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills help set you apart in collaborative and fast-paced project environments. These skills and qualifications are crucial for delivering innovative solutions and contributing effectively to engineering projects.

What is a graduate engineer?

A graduate engineer is someone who has recently completed an engineering degree, typically a bachelor's or master's, and is starting their professional career in the engineering field. They usually work under the supervision of experienced engineers while gaining practical experience and developing their technical and professional skills. Graduate engineers often participate in structured graduate programs, which may include rotations through different departments or projects. These roles are designed to help them transition from academic study to full professional responsibility.

What types of projects can a Graduate Engineer expect to work on during their first year?

As a Graduate Engineer, you can expect to be involved in a variety of projects that may include supporting senior engineers with design, analysis, testing, or implementation tasks. Early in your career, you might participate in rotations across different departments or disciplines, allowing you to gain exposure to multiple areas such as project management, field work, or research and development. Typically, you'll work as part of a collaborative team, contributing to both short-term assignments and longer-term projects while receiving mentorship and feedback. This hands-on experience is designed to help you build technical skills, understand organizational processes, and identify your preferred career path within engineering.

Job description

San Francisco, CA (Hybrid - 3 days onsite)
About LiveFlow
LiveFlow is building the next-generation accounting and finance platform - enabling lean finance teams to run massive enterprises.
We've raised over $21M from top-tier investors including YC, YC Continuity, Valar, Seedcamp, WndrCo, Moonfire, and Bradley Horowitz (VP Product, Google).
Today, thousands of companies rely on LiveFlow to streamline their financial workflows, with hundreds of 5/5 ratings on G2.
Our founding team previously worked at Revolut, one of Europe's fastest-growing fintechs.
Why Join Us
This is not a typical graduate role.
At LiveFlow, you'll contribute to real product features from day one and see your work shipped to customers quickly.
We're looking for engineers who are curious, ambitious and want to accelerate their growth in a fast-moving environment. You should be excited by early ownership and building things that matter.
You'll work closely with experienced engineers as well as product and design, and quickly build both technical depth and product intuition.
The Role
We're hiring Graduate Engineers to help build AI agents that power the next generation of LiveFlow.
This is a full-stack role at its core, with exposure to designing and developing agent-driven systems embedded throughout the product.
You don't need prior industry experience - but you do need strong fundamentals, high curiosity, and the ability to learn quickly.
What You'll Work On
  • Learning how finance teams operate and identifying opportunities to improve their workflows
  • Building product features across the stack alongside experienced engineers
  • Contributing to AI agent workflows that simplify and automate complex tasks
  • Developing APIs and systems that power our core platform
  • Improving internal tooling and engineering workflows
  • Writing clean, maintainable code and learning best practices in production systems
  • Supporting high standards of data security, reliability, and performance

How We Use AI
In Engineering:
  • You'll have access to the latest AI coding tools (e.g. Cursor, Claude)
  • We encourage experimentation with agentic workflows and developer tooling
  • You'll learn how to operate in an AI-assisted engineering environment
  • We value engineers who think about how to build faster and more effectively
In the Product:
  • We're building deeply integrated AI systems - not surface-level features
  • Agents can take actions across the platform via tools, APIs, and workflows
  • Accuracy, auditability, and security are non-negotiable
  • Speed, efficiency, and simplicity are core to our product philosophy

Our Stack
  • Backend: Elixir / Phoenix
  • Frontend: Next.js, TypeScript
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Terraform

We don't expect experience in everything. If you've worked with any modern languages or frameworks, you'll ramp quickly.
What We're Looking For
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals
  • Recent graduate or early-career engineer (0-2 years experience)
  • Evidence of building things (projects, internships, open-source, etc.)
  • Curiosity about AI, LLMs, or modern developer tools
  • Product mindset - you care about users and outcomes
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with ambiguity
  • High ownership and willingness to learn quickly

Nice to Have (Not Required)
  • Experience with any backend or frontend frameworks
  • Exposure to AI tools, LLMs, or workflow automation
  • Side projects or experimentation with new technologies

Perks & Benefits
  • Competitive salary + equity
  • Health insurance
  • Pension plan
  • Latest tech (MacBook, monitors, etc.)
  • Learning budget (books, courses, conferences)
  • Unlimited vacation

Interview Process
  • Loom Video Submission
  • Screen Call
  • Technical interview
  • Culture Fit Interview
  • Founder interview
