What is a graduate electrical engineer?

A Graduate Electrical Engineer is an entry-level professional who has recently completed a degree in electrical engineering and is starting their career in the field. They typically work under the supervision of more experienced engineers and assist with designing, developing, and testing electrical systems or equipment. Their responsibilities may include drafting plans, performing calculations, conducting research, and supporting project implementation. This role provides valuable hands-on experience and serves as a stepping stone toward becoming a fully qualified electrical engineer.

What types of projects does a graduate electrical engineer typically work on during their first year, and how much responsibility can they expect?

In their first year, Graduate Electrical Engineers often work on a variety of foundational projects, such as designing circuit layouts, assisting with testing and commissioning of electrical systems, and supporting senior engineers with documentation and calculations. While initial tasks may be more supervised, graduates are usually given increasing responsibility as they demonstrate competence, including managing small project components or liaising with clients and contractors. The environment is typically collaborative, with frequent opportunities to learn from experienced team members and participate in multidisciplinary meetings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduate electrical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduate Electrical Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and strong analytical skills. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, MATLAB, and circuit simulation software, as well as knowledge of industry standards, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for designing safe, innovative solutions and collaborating effectively on complex engineering projects.

What is the difference between Graduate Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectGraduate Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineer
QualificationsBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's degree; often requires licensure or professional certification
ExperienceEntry-level, limited professional experienceTypically 2+ years of experience in electrical design, analysis, or project management
Work EnvironmentInternships, training programs, entry-level roles in engineering firms or industriesDesign, development, testing, and project oversight in various industries

The main difference between a Graduate Electrical Engineer and an Electrical Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Graduate Electrical Engineers are entry-level professionals gaining practical experience, while Electrical Engineers have more experience and often handle complex projects and design tasks. Both roles require a degree in electrical engineering, but the Electrical Engineer typically has additional certifications and responsibilities.

Job description

NEW GRADUATE ENGINEER, ELECTRICAL (STARLINK)

Starlink believes in providing fast, reliable internet to serve populations with little or no connectivity. We design, build, launch, and operate the world's largest constellation of satellites, enabling us to operate a global internet network unbounded by traditional ground infrastructure limitations. Starlink also designs, builds, and delivers high-volume consumer hardware that allows users to connect to these satellites within minutes of unboxing, as well as our advanced gateways that we deploy regionally throughout the world. The root of SpaceX's success so far lies in our mission to keep all engineering and production in-house, which enables a tight feedback loop, nimble decision-making, and speedy deliverables. With millions of daily users worldwide already online, Starlink is a true game-changer and levels the playing field for those who were previously unconnected.

The Starlink facility in Bastrop is the newest and fastest growing site at SpaceX. With millions of square feet of manufacturing space, this site is currently responsible for the development and production of all terrestrial hardware for Starlink. This includes customer-facing devices and products that we ship directly to end users (Starlink dishes/user terminals, Wi-Fi routers, etc.). Our users currently include teachers in the most remote parts of the Amazon, researchers in Antarctica, digital nomads who travel via RV, emergency responders, commercial airlines, cruise lines, and residential users who live in more rural or developing areas. The Bastrop site is also home next-generation ground stations and core insourced manufacturing efforts like printed circuit board, solar cell, and silicon packaging production, which ultimately allows Starlink to fully own our product lifecycle and drive continuous improvements at a record pace. Additionally, Bastrop will be the center of gravity for future AI satellite development and production, ushering in the next era of dominance for SpaceX in the artificial intelligence space.

Below are a number of electrical teams that are eager to hire top engineering talent at the new graduate level:

  • Board level design - Design, develop, and verify highly reliable gateway electronics and customer products that communicate with our satellites
  • RF & Antenna - Design, fabricate, and characterize prototypes of antennas, feed systems, and RF front ends for next-generation phased arrays, gateways, and consumer wireless products
  • Process - Implement advanced manufacturing processes spanning PCB fabrication, silicon packaging, solar-cell processing etc., ultimately cementing SpaceX as one of the leading in-house manufacturing entities in the United States
  • Test - Design, develop, and program novel and automated test solutions capable of testing tens of thousands of units each day
  • Reliability - Spearhead failure analysis and root cause efforts while partnering with design and production teams to ensure that all hardware that leaves our factory is successful and reliable in the real world
  • Controls - Lead creative, multi-disciplinary projects spanning machine design, robotics, motion systems, and factory health monitoring to form the innovative, high-rate factories that allow us to deliver internet to those that need it most
  • Compliance - Drive product-level compliance for EMC, radio, and wireless technologies, ensuring all regulatory requirements are met to facilitate global market access, brand protection, and product safety of Starlink
  • Facilities - Ensure the safety and efficiency of our electrical distribution systems by improving various factory systems site-wide, including substation, switchgear, power distribution, lighting, UPS, Motor Control Centers, VFDs, and generators

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive system trades, requirements capture, component selection, analysis, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping of complex electrical designs
  • Drive hardware bring-up, debugging, documentation, manufacturing, and test of complex electronics
  • Create simulation models of hardware to evaluate performance
  • Contribute towards pre-silicon verification, chip bring-up and post-silicon validation
  • Write automation software in python to interact with units under test, test equipment, instrumentation, and documentation systems
  • Provide engineering support for the design, operation, improvement, and troubleshooting of facility electrical components and systems
  • Challenge assumptions and work to find simple solutions to complex problems

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, physics, or another STEM discipline
  • 1+ years of experience design/analysis of circuits, electronic products, or hardware (internships/co-ops and club projects can apply)
  • Graduating with a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD in 2026 or 2027

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience designing and implementing mixed-signal circuit boards using processors, FPGAs, Ethernet, multi-GHz Serdes, DRAM interfaces (DDR4), I2C, SPI, operational amplifiers, analog to digital and digital to analog converters, and power supply components
  • Experience with test equipment and measurement techniques to verify and validate product requirements (oscilloscope, multimeter, electronic load, spectrum analyzer, network analyzer, vector signal generator, source measurement unit, etc.)
  • Experience in environmental testing such as HALT/HASS, thermal, humidity, shock & vibration
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical schematics and electronics manufacturing to analyze and improve test coverage
  • Demonstrated understanding of computers and programming languages (Python, C/C++)
  • Exposure to some variety of production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (motion systems, dispense systems, temperature controllers, laser distance sensors, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing needs and requirements

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
