Job description

Occupational Summary:
The Athletic Communications Graduate Assistantship is designed to provide learning experience for those interested in pursuing a career in sports information. This person shall assist in day-to-day event operations and departmental communication on a regular basis, along with coordinating staffing and other event management needs. The ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays is an essential function of this position. Graduate assistants must maintain a 20-hour work week.
Stewardship Statement:
This position is responsible for cultivating and maintaining the institution's Catholic identity and its mission to empower graduates to transform society. As a member of the Newman community, the staff member will join with the institution's sponsors, the Adorers of the Blood of Christ (ASC Sisters), to witness God's love in Mission to empower others, foster oneness, celebrate life, form right relationships, and walk as compassionate companions. Additionally, this position contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other faiths, cultures, or backgrounds.
Work Performed:

  1. Develop relationships with coaching staff and athletic department as a whole in order to assist with the operations of their teams.
  2. Assist with game day promotions on field and on court.
  3. Conduct oneself in a professional and ethical manner at all times.
  4. Provide quality customer service to fans and constituents.
  5. Assist with the supervision of student workers.
  6. Write and edit press releases.
  7. Assist with facility preparation, setup/teardown before and after home athletic events.
  8. Provide event management, including operating scoreboards, music, and public address announcing.
  9. Record live statistics for sports of soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball and softball.
  10. Collect and compile statistics for all 18 of Newman’s athletic teams.
  11. Maintain and update the Newman athletics website.
  12. Maintain and update Newman athletics’ social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.
  13. Provide graphic design for department publications.
  14. Work with and pitch stories to news media, both locally and nationally.
  15. Oversee and provide scheduling for student workers.
  16. Complete University-required training, including FERPA and Title IX.
  17. Contribute to the overall success of the Athletics and Sports Information departments by performing all other duties as assigned and appropriate to the position.
Requirements:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree.
  2. Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  3. Must be accepted and enrolled full-time (at least six (6) credit hours per semester) in a Master’s degree program (M.S.E. Organizational Leadership preferred) during the academic year (fall and spring semester).
  4. Previous experience in a college athletic setting.
  5. Genuine interest in and willingness to work with students; understanding of student attitudes, concerns and problems.
  6. Strong organizational and computer skills.
  7. Knowledge of NCAA compliance rules and the ability to apply them.
  8. AED and/or CPR training are preferred.
Compensation:
  1. This is a 12-month position with a contract that requires annual renewal.
  2. Monthly stipend of $250.00 throughout the duration of the waiver, ceasing upon completion of the degree.
  3. University housing is not provided for this position; housing arrangements are coordinated through the Director of Residence Life.
  4. Graduate Assistants will be provided with the 120-day meal plan option. Meals are available only when the dining hall is open for traditional students.
  5. Eligible for fall, spring, and summer tuition waiver. The student is responsible for payment of books, general fees, parking, and living expenses. Must follow tuition waiver policy and submittal deadlines.
  6. Note: Certain benefits associated with this position (including tuition waivers, stipends, housing, and meal plans) may be treated as taxable income under IRS guidelines. Tax treatment varies by individual circumstance; the student is responsible for any applicable taxes.
Additional Information
  • Tuition remission scholarships are dependent upon enrollment in the course(s) by regular, tuition-paying students. The university reserves the right to move classes from the face-to-face modality to the online modality in order to ensure a reasonable minimum class size is met, at the sole discretion of the university. Tuition remission scholarships do not guarantee that any course will be available in any given modality, depending upon enrollment. If space is limited in any class, persons using any tuition benefit scholarships may be enrolled in the order in which they registered for the class.
  • Graduate Assistant for Sports Information may not hold other full-time employment.  Other part-time employment in or outside the University must receive prior approval from the Director of Athletics.
  • As a condition for retention in the role, the Graduate Assistant must remain in good academic standing, which is a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00.
  • A criminal background check will be performed prior to employment offer.
