What are some common challenges faced by government software engineers when working on public sector projects?

Government software engineers often encounter unique challenges such as navigating strict security protocols, complying with regulatory standards, and working with legacy systems that may require modernization. These projects typically involve extensive documentation and collaboration with cross-functional teams, including policy makers and end users, to ensure solutions meet public needs. Additionally, timelines can be influenced by procurement processes and budget constraints, making flexibility and strong communication skills essential for success.

Responsibilitiesย

  • Participate in the full application lifecycle, with a focus on developing features and delivering value to users.ย
  • Develop, test, integrate, and deploy backend, frontend, and APIย stacks.ย
  • Maintain and ensure the high availability ofย GHGSatย web services, both externally and internally.ย
  • Collaborate with developers, designers, QA, and Product Ownersย toย identifyย and shape new features.ย

Requirements

Required qualificationsย

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.ย
  • A provenย track recordย of building and shipping scalable web applications that drive user value.ย
  • Strong experience with Python and TypeScript in a web context.ย
  • Experience designing and implementing services in the cloud (AWS).ย
  • Experience deploying containerized applications with Docker and/or Kubernetes.ย
  • Experience with databases and ETL systems (PostgreSQL).ย
  • A test-driven development mindset, with solid CI/CD and documentation practices.ย

Desired qualificationsย

  • Python web frameworks such as Django orย FastAPI.ย
  • Python ETL tooling such as pandas,ย SQLAlchemy, orย dbt.ย
  • Frontend experience with React and Material UI.ย
  • Deployment tooling such as Argo within a Kubernetes environment.ย
  • Comfort working in a Linux environment.ย
