Job Description
Are you looking to join an award-winning organization with a culture built on innovation and public service? The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, which is the fourth largest area in the United States.
The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments is seeking an Intern to support its government relations program. The student in this position will assist with government relations efforts including monitoring state and federal legislative activity. Ideal candidates should attend school in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 20 hours per week while attending school.
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Working with supervisor to monitor legislative and regulatory actions at the federal and state levels related to transportation and air quality
  • Working with supervisor to summarize legislation and rulemakings
  • Drafting for supervisor review, written and oral legislative updates
  • Drafting for supervisor review, correspondence and educational materials to conduct outreach with elected officials at the federal, State, and local levels
  • Drafting for supervisor review, correspondence supporting transportation-related grant applications
  • Maintaining contact information for elected officials and committee members
Required Skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Access desired
  • Good communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with team members, and present ideas
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment

Required Education and Experience
  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment (i.e., political science/government, urban/regional planning, public administration, or related field)
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary
Minimum of $17.10 per hour
The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG's purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions. Since 1974, NCTCOG has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area. The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
