What is a government custodian?

A Government Custodian is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in government buildings, offices, and public facilities. Their duties include sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing restrooms, removing trash, and performing minor maintenance tasks. They ensure a safe and sanitary environment for employees and visitors. Custodians may also be responsible for securing buildings and reporting necessary repairs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a government custodian?

To thrive as a Government Custodian, you need proficiency in cleaning procedures, facility maintenance, and adherence to safety and sanitation regulations, often with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with professional-grade cleaning equipment, floor care machines, and safe chemical handling is typically required; some positions may also require background checks or specific safety training. Strong attention to detail, reliability, and good communication skills help custodians work efficiently and collaborate with building staff. These skills are important to ensure government facilities are clean, safe, and operational for employees and the public.

What are typical work hours and schedules for government custodians?

Government custodians often work early morning, evening, or overnight shifts to clean and maintain public buildings outside of regular business hours, though some positions may require daytime availability. Shifts can be full-time or part-time, and weekend or holiday work may be necessary depending on the facility and department needs. The role can involve working independently or as part of a custodial team, especially in larger buildings. By understanding the schedule, job seekers can better assess how the position fits with their personal commitments and preferences.
