Instructional Assistant - ASL Language Facilitator
Position Purpose
Providing support to the instructional program within an assigned classroom with specific responsibility for assisting the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, school staff, peers, and licensed ASL teacher. Serving as a liaison between the licensed teacher, students, and families for effective communication and class management.
Essential Job Functions
  • Collaborate closely with the ASL instructor to anticipate classroom needs and seamlessly reinforce classroom expectations.
  • Monitor and manage student behavior collaboratively with the ASL instructor in accordance with school policies and classroom rules to maintain a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans and positive reinforcement strategies that were constructed with the ASL instructor to minimize disruptions and keep students focused on instruction.
  • Assist the ASL teacher in supervising and facilitating daily classroom activities, transitions between tasks, and group work.
  • Observe and document student behavior patterns, reporting significant changes or incidents to the lead teacher and administration as needed.
  • Assist with proctoring and administering quizzes, tests, and standardized evaluations within the school room setting, ensuring strict adherence to testing accommodations and protocols.
  • Maintain a quiet, distraction-free testing environment to help students maximize their performance.
  • Provide non-instructional testing support, such as clarifying formatting instructions or arranging adaptive seating/materials for students with specific accommodations.
  • Advocate for students by communicating students' progress and needs with the licensed teacher and parents/guardians as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Equipment
  • Operate and monitor real-time speech-to-text or captioning applications (such as Ava, Otter.ai, or Google Live Transcribe) on classroom tablets or laptops to ensure clear, immediate translation of spoken student responses during group discussions or testing.
  • Manage classroom Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) hardware, troubleshooting connections to ensure seamless access to off-site certified interpreters when an on-site interpreter is unavailable.
  • Navigate interactive whiteboards and digital presentation tools to load visual behavioral prompts, daily agendas, and written testing instructions, reducing the reliance on vocal commands.
  • Basic operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers, peripherals and media equipment
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with Google, Microsoft Office and/or other department software packages
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with standard office equipment, such as telephones, copier, fax machine, E-mail, etc.

Travel Requirements
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
