Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE or JOB SUMMARY
To provide safe and efficient transportation for preschool children according to applicable safety standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Transport children and staff to and from Head Start centers and other activities using established routes and procedures.
  2. Assist in the transportation of vehicles for maintenance and repair.
  3. Communicate effectively with parents and staff the rules and regulations as they relate to transporting children.
  4. Operates vehicle in a safe manner at all times, observing all traffic rules and policies/procedures of the Head Start Program.
  5. Inspect assigned vehicle daily to ensure that it is in proper operating condition.
  6. Follow rules of good conduct while operating the bus and make sure passengers do the same.
  7. Maintain assigned vehicle in a high state of cleanliness and safety.
  8. Respond to emergencies in prescribed manner.
  9. Maintain all safety equipment in the vehicle at all times and know how to use it.
  10. Maintain accurate and current records on vehicle maintenance, route descriptions, accident reports, mileage logs, daily vehicle inspections and gas purchases.
  11. Submit reports on a timely basis
  12. Understand and follow the policies of the Transportation Handbook as well as policies and procedures of GLEAMNS.
  13. Participates in all transportation staff meetings and training workshops.
  14. Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

ACCOUNTABILITY
Responsible for the safe transport of children to pre-determined points for loading and unloading.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
None.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be dependable, have appropriate and professional dress.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and lift at least 50 pounds.
  • Successfully pass drug/alcohol testing.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Must have ability to communicate with a variety of people, work independently, and maintain strict confidentiality of program data. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude towards working as a team with other staff members. Must exercise discretion and sound judgment in the performance of assigned duties.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the job description. Minimum two years related working experience. A valid South Carolina Commercial Driver's License with school bus endorsement is desirable and evidence of a good driving record.
