What is a good sleep specialist?

A Good Sleep Specialist is a healthcare professional who focuses on diagnosing and treating sleep disorders to help individuals achieve quality sleep. They may include sleep medicine doctors, sleep technologists, or therapists with expertise in sleep health. These specialists assess issues such as insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and other sleep-related problems. Through evaluation, testing, and treatment plans, they strive to improve a person's sleep quality, which is essential for overall health and well-being.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sleep technologist?

To thrive as a Sleep Technologist, you need knowledge of sleep disorders, physiology, and the ability to conduct and interpret polysomnographic studies, usually supported by a relevant degree or certification such as RPSGT. Familiarity with polysomnography equipment, CPAP/BiPAP machines, and sleep study software is essential. Strong attention to detail, patient communication, and problem-solving skills help ensure accurate data collection and patient comfort. These skills are vital for diagnosing sleep disorders and supporting effective treatment plans to improve patient health.

What are some typical challenges faced by sleep technologists when conducting overnight sleep studies?

Sleep Technologists often work overnight shifts in a clinical or hospital setting, monitoring patients undergoing sleep studies. Challenges can include managing complex equipment, addressing unexpected patient needs or discomfort, and ensuring accurate data collection throughout the night. Technologists must be able to troubleshoot technical issues quickly and communicate effectively with both patients and the healthcare team. Additionally, adapting to an overnight work schedule and maintaining attention to detail during long shifts are important aspects of the role.

Job description

Position Overview

We are redefining the role of dentistry by connecting oral health with whole-body wellness. As our practice continues to grow, we are expanding beyond traditional preventive care to incorporate advanced diagnostics, airway health, sleep wellness, and digital dentistry.

We are seeking a motivated, compassionate, and growth-oriented Dental Hygienist who is passionate about providing exceptional patient care and eager to broaden their clinical expertise. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside a collaborative team committed to integrating oral health with systemic health through comprehensive patient assessments, advanced screening technologies, and evidence-based treatment recommendations.

The ideal candidate embraces continuous learning, enjoys patient education, and is excited to develop skills in emerging areas of dentistry, including sleep apnea screening, salivary diagnostics, digital scanning, and clear aligner workflows.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive oral health screenings, periodontal assessments, and dental hygiene evaluations for new and existing patients.
  • Deliver preventive and periodontal care, including prophylaxis, scaling and root planing, periodontal maintenance, fluoride treatments, and sealants.
  • Evaluate patients for risk factors that impact both oral and systemic health, helping identify conditions that may benefit from additional screening or referral.
  • Participate in airway and sleep health assessments, including patient screening for sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea as part of comprehensive care.
  • Collect salivary diagnostic samples and assist with saliva pathology and oral microbiome testing as part of preventive and systemic health protocols.
  • Educate patients on the connection between oral health and overall wellness, including periodontal disease, inflammation, cardiovascular health, diabetes, and sleep health.
  • Capture high-quality diagnostic radiographs and intraoral images while maintaining all radiation safety standards.
  • Utilize intraoral scanners to create digital impressions and support restorative, orthodontic, and clear aligner workflows.
  • Assist with Invisalign® and other clear aligner cases, including digital scans, patient education, progress monitoring, and aligner delivery support.
  • Maintain accurate electronic patient records using digital charting and practice management software.
  • Follow OSHA, CDC, HIPAA, and infection control protocols while maintaining a safe, organized clinical environment.
  • Collaborate closely with dentists, dental assistants, and administrative team members to deliver an exceptional patient experience.
  • Support practice growth by embracing new technologies, participating in continuing education, and helping implement innovative clinical services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Dental Hygienist license in good standing.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene.
  • Minimum of one year of clinical dental hygiene experience in a general dentistry practice (new graduates with exceptional clinical training and a passion for learning are encouraged to apply).
  • Strong clinical skills in preventive and periodontal therapy.
  • Experience with digital radiography, electronic health records, and practice management software such as Eaglesoft.
  • Experience with intraoral scanning, digital impressions, and Invisalign® or other clear aligner workflows is strongly preferred.
  • Interest or experience in sleep apnea screening, airway-focused dentistry, salivary diagnostic testing, and the relationship between oral and systemic health is highly valued.
  • Comfortable learning and implementing new technologies and clinical protocols in a progressive practice environment.
  • Excellent communication, patient education, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Why Join Our Team?

We are building the future of patient-centered dental care by integrating oral health with overall health and wellness. We invest in innovative technologies, advanced diagnostics, and ongoing professional development so our clinical team can practice at the highest level.

We are looking for hygienists who are curious, adaptable, and committed to lifelong learning—professionals who want to expand beyond traditional hygiene responsibilities and become key contributors in comprehensive patient care. If you're excited to grow your clinical skills in digital dentistry, airway health, salivary diagnostics, clear aligner therapy, and preventive medicine while making a meaningful impact on patients' lives, we'd love to meet you.
