What is a Good Lab?

A Good Lab job typically refers to a position in a laboratory that focuses on maintaining high standards of research, experimentation, and safety. These jobs can include roles such as lab technicians, analysts, or researchers in fields like biology, chemistry, and medical sciences. Responsibilities often involve conducting experiments, analyzing data, and ensuring compliance with safety protocols. A Good Lab job requires attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and sometimes specialized education or certifications.

What are the typical daily responsibilities for a Good Lab?

Laboratory professionals routinely conduct experiments, run tests, and analyze samples according to established protocols. They also calibrate and maintain lab equipment, meticulously record data, and follow strict safety regulations. Collaboration with scientists, research staff, or quality assurance teams is common, allowing for efficient troubleshooting and validation of results. These tasks are vital for supporting larger research goals and ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory findings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Good Lab position?

To succeed in a laboratory environment, strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a background in chemistry, biology, or a related science are typically required. Familiarity with laboratory equipment, safety procedures, and data analysis software—often supported by relevant certifications—are essential. Excellent organization, teamwork, and communication skills help ensure accuracy and efficient collaboration. These abilities are crucial for maintaining research integrity, ensuring safety, and achieving reliable results.

Job Description

This is an entry-level position suitable for individuals seeking hands-on experience in protein purification and quality control in an industrial bioprocessing environment. The Associate will support the downstream team in executing purification workflows and conducting protein characterization assays to evaluate product quality. Responsibilities include chromatography-based purification, recombinant protein QC related tasks under the guidance of project scientists. This role requires strong attention to detail, good lab documentation practices, and effective collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

  • Perform purification of recombinant proteins and antibodies from mammalian expression systems using chromatography methods and equipment (e.g., AKTA systems).
  • Execute established downstream workflows to meet project specifications and client requirements.
  • Conduct protein quality control testing, including SDS-PAGE, HPLC-SEC, endotoxin assays, UV-Vis concentration measurement, and other analytical assays.
  • Support lead scientists in preparing and analyzing QC data and interpreting protein quality results as part of downstream bioprocessing, including purification and quality control.
  • Maintain accurate batch records, lab notebooks, and QC documentation in compliance with internal standards and client requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and PPE usage in accordance with federal, state, and local regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist with calibration, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of chromatography and analytical instruments.
  • Collaborate with other teams within the Center to support smooth project coordination and delivery.

  • 0–3 years of relevant laboratory experience, with basic understanding of protein purification and analytical methods.
  • Familiarity with chromatographic systems such as FPLC or HPLC used for protein purification.
  • Experience or exposure to protein QC analytical assays, such as SDS-PAGE, HPLC-SEC, and endotoxin testing and ELISA.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills, with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including early/late weekday shifts and occasional weekend work depending on project needs.
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative team mindset.
