Job description

The Central Heating Plant Supervisor supervises team of skilled technicians in the central heating plant, coordinating maintenance and reliable operation of the College's Central Heating Plant and all associated components for steam and electricity production to meet continuous campus energy demand. This position works with the Associate Director of Mechanical and Utilities on bigger picture issues of departmental and employee development and also functions as a plant operator. 

This is a full-time, benefits eligible, hourly position with a hiring range of $33.31 - $38.92 per hour.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, train, hire, and evaluate approximately 5 hourly staff members who maintain and operate the Central Heating Plant 24/7. Recommends staffing needs, schedules staff, and approves overtime and time off. Ensures timely completion of jobs and smooth departmental operations. Evaluates staff; counsels and handles disciplinary procedures, resolves employee issues, and keeps morale high.  
  • Full Responsibility to oversee and manage the 24/7 schedule of CHP operations staff.  
  • Essential ownership to access/grow/manage individual strengths and opportunities to support of CHP operations staff for success of team and support the needs of the department and college.  
  • Support training program for CHP operator development and continuous training of existing team.  
  • Coordinates and maintains oversight of all plant maintenance activities, in collaboration with the Associate Director – Mechanical & Utilities, including: routine biomass plant maintenance outages, annual boiler outages, turbine / generators services, control system services, and plant auxiliary system services.  
  • Collaborates with Associate Director – Mechanical & Utilities to support all campus energy goals.  
  • Ensures plant safety procedures are followed, including: lockout / tag-out, confined space and PPE for in-house personnel and contracted services. Support department safety and regulator compliance including all facets of the campus air pollution control permit.  
  • Serves as CHP Operator as part of the weekly schedule, and meet all requirements of that job description. 60% time operating the plant 40% time as supervisor.  

Requirements

  • 3 - 5 years of previous related experience required.  
  • Related education and certifications in power plant operations and maintenance.  
  • Knowledge of steam and electric generating systems.  
  • Trouble shooting skills for heating plant electrical, steam, condensate, oil, biomass, feed water, propane, air systems and equipment.  
  • Control System operations and trouble-shooting experience.  
  • Deep practical knowledge and skills of equipment maintenance and service.  
  • Strong interpersonal skills required. This position is intended to supervise /lead/build a high performance work team.  

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a heating plant, conditions can be loud/dusty on occasions. Requires the ability to operate equipment.
