Indiana's flagship university now boasts an elite, championship golf course that not only rivals any layout in the state but is among the premiere public golf courses in the Midwest.
Opened in 2020, The Pfau Course at Indiana University was built on the same 265-acre east side Bloomington property previously occupied by the IU Championship Golf Course, the original Par-3 course, and the IU Cross Country Course since the 1950s. But other than its location, everything about The Pfau Course is different from its predecessor, providing golfers with a new must-see, must-experience destination golf course just minutes from the Indiana University campus.
Designed by highly acclaimed architect Steve Smyers and 2-time major winner and Hoosier native Fuzzy Zoeller, The Pfau Course at Indiana University offers a unique, world-class layout that is set in the natural beauty of southern Indiana. Smyers utilized the area's natural topography in designing the course, while also highlighting the combination of forest, open space and forest edges that result in both amazing views and a wonderful golfing test.
Job Summary
The Golf Course Superintendent is a critical leadership role responsible for managing the maintenance and overall agronomic health of the IU Golf Course, the Golf Team Practice area, and providing expert consultation for key athletic playing fields.
Department Specific Responsibilities
  • Oversees turfgrass management, irrigation, chemical applications, and personnel management, ensuring championship-caliber playing conditions while prioritizing safety and regulatory compliance.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day operational management of grounds crew staff.
  • Establishes short-term operational objectives.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
  • Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve turf and grounds; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Researches and stays up to date on new industry turf and grounds standards, best practices, and emerging technology; keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.

EDUCATION
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in business, inventory management, controls, facilities management, or related field.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Turf Management, or a related field
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
  • 2 years in business, inventory management, controls, facilities management, or related field
Preferred
  • 3 years of experience in turf management, including proven track record of supervising a moderately sized support crew.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
  • Possesses a valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University Upon Date of Hire

  • High-level critical thinking, sharp mental effort.
  • Ability to effectively manage both a physical property and a diverse team budget.
Working Conditions / Demands
This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
