What is global risk management?

Global risk management is the process of identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks that could affect an organization’s operations, assets, or reputation on an international scale. It involves analyzing geopolitical, financial, regulatory, and environmental risks across different regions where a company operates. Professionals in this field develop strategies to minimize potential losses and ensure business continuity worldwide. Effective global risk management helps organizations make informed decisions and remain resilient in a rapidly changing global landscape.

How does a professional in Global Risk Management typically collaborate with teams across different regions or departments?

In Global Risk Management, professionals regularly coordinate with colleagues from various regions and departments to identify, assess, and mitigate risks that could impact the organization worldwide. This often involves virtual meetings, cross-functional projects, and sharing best practices or regulatory updates. Strong communication skills are essential, as you'll work closely with finance, compliance, legal, and operational teams to ensure a unified approach to risk. Building relationships across these groups not only helps in addressing complex, region-specific risks but also opens up opportunities for professional growth and global exposure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Global Risk Management, and why are they important?

To thrive in Global Risk Management, you need strong analytical skills, knowledge of international regulations, and typically a degree in finance, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with risk assessment tools, compliance software, and certifications like FRM (Financial Risk Manager) are highly valued. Exceptional communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively across cultures distinguish top performers. These skills ensure effective identification, assessment, and mitigation of risks in complex, multinational environments.

Job description

YOUR IMPACT
As a Vice President leading Counterparty Risk within Global Risk Management at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, you will lead a critical risk function supporting informed risk-taking across financing, derivatives and trading activities. You will assess and evaluate counterparty exposures, trading agreements, and influence risk appetite through independent, data-driven insights.
Working closely with portfolio managers, trading, legal and senior stakeholders, you will strengthen counterparty risk frameworks, enhance transparency on exposures, and improve stress testing and reporting to identify concentrations, assess counterparty resilience and inform decision-making.
OUR IMPACT
Global Risk Management sits at the center of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, providing independent oversight and governance for a global platform with over USD 3 trillion in assets under supervision across public and private markets, funds and separately managed accounts. Our mandate is to support sustainable growth by helping the business take risk thoughtfully-bringing transparency to portfolio exposures, stress and liquidity dynamics, counterparty and operational risks, and the broader control environment. We partner closely with portfolio management, trading, and control functions such as Legal, Compliance, and Firm-wide Risk to strengthen frameworks, improve monitoring and reporting, meet regulatory obligations and continuously evolve our risk practices in line with a fast-changing market and product landscape.
HOW YOU WILL FULFILL YOUR POTENTIAL:
As a Vice President leading Counterparty Risk within Global Risk Management at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, you will lead a small global team and partner closely with trading, derivatives legal, credit risk, liquidity operations and divisional risk leadership. You will be responsible for:
  • Leading, coaching and developing your team; setting priorities, ensuring high-quality delivery and fostering a culture of curiosity and constructive challenge
  • Owning counterparty risk coverage across trading relationships, providing independent perspectives that influence risk appetite and transaction-level decisions
  • Oversee exposure monitoring, limit frameworks and stress testing to identify concentrations, assess counterparty resilience and escalate emerging risks
  • Deliver clear, actionable reporting to senior stakeholders on counterparty exposures, trends and key risk themes
  • Drive enhancements to counterparty risk frameworks, analytics and tooling in partnership with Engineering and Technology teams

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE WE'RE LOOKING FOR:
Qualifications and experience
  • 7+ years of relevant experience counterparty and/or credit risk management, ideally buy-side, covering derivatives, financing and trading activities
  • Deep understanding of counterparty risk, including exposure measurement, collateral dynamics, concentration risk and stress scenarios across trading relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with senior stakeholders (PMs, Trading, Legal and Risk) and influence decisions through independent, well-reasoned risk perspectives
  • Experience overseeing risk frameworks and governance, including limit structures, stress testing and escalation of material risks
  • Track record of delivering clear, actionable reporting to senior management and engaging effectively in governance forums
  • Strong relationship skills, with experience managing and developing a team, and driving high-quality execution
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, ideally with hands-on experience developing risk analytics and some familiarity with programming and BI tools (e.g., Python, Tableau/Power BI)
  • Highly organised, intellectually curious and proactive, with excellent verbal and written communication
