A GitHub job typically refers to a role related to GitHub, either as an employee of GitHub Inc. or a position that heavily involves using GitHub for version control and collaboration. Jobs at GitHub Inc. range from engineering and product management to customer support and sales. Outside the company, many software development or DevOps roles require proficiency with GitHub to manage code repositories, collaborate with teams, and automate workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GitHub Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as a GitHub Developer, you need strong programming skills, experience with version control, and a solid understanding of collaborative software development workflows. Familiarity with Git, continuous integration systems like GitHub Actions, and knowledge of markdown and issue tracking are typically required. Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities help developers contribute to projects and resolve issues efficiently. These skills are crucial for successful code collaboration, project management, and delivering high-quality open-source or enterprise software solutions.

What is a GitHub developer?

A GitHub developer is someone who uses GitHub, a web-based platform for version control and collaboration, to manage and contribute to software development projects. They utilize Git, a distributed version control system, to track changes in code, collaborate with team members, and manage project workflows. GitHub developers often contribute to open-source projects, participate in code reviews, and use features like pull requests and issues to coordinate development efforts. Their work helps ensure code quality, maintainability, and seamless collaboration in software projects.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers working at GitHub, and how can they be addressed?

Software engineers at GitHub often work on large-scale, distributed systems that require collaboration across multiple teams and time zones. One common challenge is maintaining effective communication and coordination while working remotely. Engineers address this by utilizing robust documentation, regular asynchronous updates, and collaborative tools like pull requests and code reviews. Additionally, managing the complexity of a platform used by millions of developers requires strong testing practices and a focus on scalability and security.

Job description

Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era

At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. We believe in harnessing AI responsibly to unlock new possibilities, and we're looking for individuals who use it intentionally to solve problems, accelerate outcomes, and expand what's possible in their role. Our purpose is to help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers who shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.

Source Control & Repository Operations

  • Administer and maintain GitHub repository structure, access controls, and branch protection policies

  • Triage and resolve GitHub issues across teams - permissions, integrations, and webhook configurations

  • Define and enforce standards for repository hygiene, naming conventions, and code ownership

CI/CD & Deployment Pipelines

  • Design, build, and maintain GitHub Actions workflows for continuous integration and delivery

  • Own the end-to-end deployment pipeline from GitHub to Vercel, including preview environments, production promotions, and rollback workflows

  • Establish pipeline observability - build monitoring, failure alerting, and deployment audit trails

Infrastructure & Platform Engineering

  • Participate in infrastructure provisioning and lifecycle management using infrastructure-as-code practices

  • Collaborate with engineering teams to improve deployment reliability and reduce time to production

  • Document runbooks, architecture decisions, and pipeline configurations

AI-Augmented Engineering

  • Actively use AI tools - including Claude - as part of your daily workflow: generating boilerplate, drafting IaC configurations, debugging pipelines, and accelerating documentation

  • Identify and socialize opportunities where AI tooling can improve team efficiency

Stakeholder Collaboration & AI Code Deployment

  • Partner with business stakeholders, product teams, and non-technical users to understand deployment needs and translate AI-generated code into production-ready applications

  • Own the review, validation, and deployment lifecycle for AI-assisted code - ensuring quality, security, and compliance standards are met before code reaches GitHub and production environments

  • Guide stakeholders through the AI development workflow: from prompt-to-code generation through pull request, pipeline execution, and deployment to Cloudflare or GCP

  • Establish guardrails and best practices for how AI-generated code is reviewed, tested, and promoted across environments

What You'll Need
  • 3+ years of experience in a systems, platform, or DevOps engineering role

  • Proven experience building and maintaining GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines

  • Experience configuring and managing deployments on Cloudflare, including environment management and build configuration

  • Demonstrated use of AI tools (such as Claude, Copilot, or similar) as a core part of your engineering workflow, not just familiarity, but active, daily use

  • Strong written communication skills; comfortable writing documentation and runbooks

  • Proficiency with a scripting language such as Python, Bash, or Powershell

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and state management

  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Cloud Run, IAM, Cloud Storage, or networking

  • Exposure to Cisco Meraki for network administration or monitoring

  • Experience with identity and access management tooling (Okta, Google Workspace)

  • Background in IT infrastructure and enterprise IT environments

Work Where You Thrive

This is a hybrid role. For candidates based in the Austin metro area, the position follows a hybrid work model with three days per week in the office, balancing focused individual work with meaningful in-person collaboration.
