A GI Endoscopy Tech, or Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Technician, is a healthcare professional who assists doctors and nurses during endoscopic procedures that examine the digestive tract. Their responsibilities include preparing and maintaining endoscopic equipment, ensuring patient safety, and assisting with specimen collection. They also play a crucial role in infection control by cleaning and sterilizing instruments. GI Endoscopy Techs work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and specialty centers, supporting gastroenterologists and nursing staff throughout endoscopic procedures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a GI endoscopy tech?

To thrive as a GI Endoscopy Tech, you need a solid understanding of endoscopic procedures, sterile technique, and basic anatomy, often supported by completion of a specialized training program or certification such as the SGNA GI Technical Specialist (GTS). Familiarity with endoscopy equipment, infection control protocols, and electronic medical records (EMR) systems is crucial. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for ensuring patient safety, supporting physicians effectively, and maintaining high standards of care during GI procedures.
