JOB SUMMARY
The Endoscopy Technician II is responsible for the care, handling and processing of endoscopy procedural equipment and turnover of the procedure room(s). This includes management of repairs, inventory, management of receiving, and stocking of supplies. Assists with patient care as appropriate, Patient interactions include transportation to the department and assisting with the pre-op preparation as directed by the RN.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Other duties may be assigned.
• Reports to Director of Endoscopy and is supervised by RNs and physicians.
• Works cooperatively with members of nursing staff, physicians, managers and support staff
• Supports registered nurses with procedures as directed.
• Verifies proper equipment functioning and performs safety checks.
• Interacts professionally with patients and families.
• Complies with all of the organizations policies, procedures, department guidelines.
• Maintains a clean, safe patient care area and staff work area by performing activities, including but not limited to:
o Complies with infection control principles, standards of Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc (SGNA) in standards of endoscopic cleaning, and standards of Sterile Processing as set forth by the American Association of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). These principles are to maintain a safe and infection free environment.
o Assists in appropriate care and handling and cleaning of equipment and instruments.
o Utilize the Automated Endoscopic Re-processor (AER).
o Perform leak test per policy.
o Properly demonstrates how to test the high-level disinfectant for efficacy and can document the test results.
o Assists in preparing supplies and equipment.
o Demonstrates the proper packaging of instruments as needed.
o Cleans spills/breakages.
o Cleans body fluids/bio-hazardous waste following the organizations' guidelines.
• Assists with other activities on the patient care unit as delegated, including, but not limited to:
o Track's location of equipment and maintains the inventory of equipment.
o Maintains accurate maintenance records of all equipment.
o Reports/complies maintenance requisitions for equipment repairs.
o Monitors and maintains clean linen supply and restocks supplies in rooms.
o Aides in maintaining stock levels of all supplies in the decontamination room, procedural rooms, and the recovery rooms.
o Complies with cleaning procedures.
o Utilizes all Manufacturer's Instruction for Use
• Uses PPE (Personal protective equipment) appropriate to the department: Impervious gown, Face shield, gloves, etc.
• Appropriately runs scope washer/decontaminator. Loads instruments correctly, operates machine properly and records load properly.
• Maintains scope washer by changing filters, fluids and documenting maintenance as per manufacture instructions.
• Receives contaminated instruments and equipment. Disassembles instruments, mechanical cleaning, handwashing of instruments, and other goods and demonstrates proper cleaning
• Knowledge of endoscopes and accessories with ability to trouble shoot and identify mechanical problems and the scopes in need of repair. Assembles and inspects instruments.
• Maintains PAR levels of specialty supplies and equipment. Assist the staff RN as directed with transportation of patients, preparation of room for procedure, and setting up instruments.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
• High school graduate or G.E.D. required.
• Graduated from an accredited Surgical technology program
• Association of Surgical Technologist Certified
• Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) certification within 12 months.
• Prior endoscopy experience preferred
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the patient care setting.
• Basic computer knowledge: ability to operate a PC, create/save/print documents, input data.
• Previous experience maintaining equipment and ordering supplies a plus.
