POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Student Zone Helper (SZH) supports students in grades K-12 with completing their school assignments by leveraging a variety of resources available in the Los Angeles Public Library's (LAPL) Student Zones, including digital tools. Student Zone Helpers are expected to provide assistance and/or resources in a variety of school subjects, to the best of their ability, and to refer students to library staff for additional support, as needed.

Each Student Zone Helper will be assigned to one of the LAPL branches listed below and will work a consistent weekly schedule based on the needs of their specific location. This in-person position requires a commitment of 12 hours per week, with three-hour shifts scheduled Monday through Thursday between 2:30pm to 7:00pm (exact hours vary by branch). Student Zone Helpers may not exceed 24 hours in a two-week pay period.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Student Zone during after-school homework hours.
  • Prepare the Student Zone area in the library to ensure it is ready to support students during designated hours. Set up, organize, and maintain all Student Zone materials and supplies, including electronic equipment and stationery.
  • Encourage K-12 students and assist them with completing their school assignments. This includes referring students to LAPL resources, including digital resources.
  • Answer basic student questions and refer complex reference questions to library staff.

Student Support and Resources

  • Register participating K-12th grade students for LAPL resources, including library cards.
  • Help students use electronic equipment and educational apps or programs.
  • Assist librarians in identifying apps and computer programs that meet students' academic needs.

Health and Safety

  • Ensure students follow library rules of behavior and conduct at all times.
  • Follow all emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment in alignment with current LAPL health and safety protocols.

Recordkeeping and Reporting

  • Assist library staff with maintaining attendance records and participant data.
  • Prepare and submit field reports for each student who visits the Student Zone.
  • Complete and submit Monthly Feedback Reports.
  • Submit both paper and electronic timesheets via ExtensisHR promptly to ensure accurate tracking and processing.

Training and Development

  • Attend all mandatory Student Zone Helper training sessions, scheduled throughout the year.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Passion for PowerMyLearning's mission
  • High school diploma with minimum 3.5 GPA (transcript required)
  • Must be at least 18 years old due to unsupervised interactions with minors and responsibilities involving library equipment.
  • Must successfully complete a LiveScan background check after a conditional offer of employment, in accordance with California's Fair Chance Act.
  • Fluent in English, both spoken and written
  • For some sites: Fluent in Spanish, both spoken and written
  • Proficient computer skills, especially with Google Workspace tools (e.g., Google Docs, Drive, Sheets, Chromebooks)
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to create and maintain a positive, engaging learning environment
  • Dependable and punctual, with the ability to maintain a consistent schedule
  • Excellent problem-solving and customer service skills
  • A collaborative team player who can also thrive working independently with minimal supervision
  • Experience working directly with children and families, particularly in educational or community-based settings

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to bend, crouch, or kneel frequently throughout the day
  • Comfortable working in crowded or close-quarter environments

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluent in Spanish, both spoken and written
    • Note: Some locations require Spanish fluency

COMPENSATION

  • $22.50/hour
