As a Geotechnical Intern, you can expect to assist with field investigations, such as soil sampling and site surveys, as well as laboratory testing and analysis of soil, rock, and groundwater samples. You'll likely support engineers in preparing technical reports, organizing data, and sometimes working with drafting software to visualize findings. Projects may include foundations for buildings, roadways, embankments, or retaining walls, giving you hands-on exposure to the practical applications of geotechnical engineering. This role often involves both outdoor work at project sites and time in the office, providing a well-rounded internship experience that helps build skills for future career advancement.
To thrive as a Geotechnical Intern, you need a foundational knowledge of soil mechanics, geology, and basic civil engineering concepts, generally supported by coursework or a relevant degree program. Experience using soil sampling tools, AutoCAD, and geotechnical testing equipment is often required, and familiarity with safety protocols is a plus. Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel in both fieldwork and reporting tasks. These competencies are vital for ensuring accurate data collection and analysis, which directly support safe and successful civil engineering projects.
A Geotechnical Intern assists engineers in evaluating soil, rock, and groundwater conditions for construction and infrastructure projects. Responsibilities may include fieldwork such as soil sampling, lab testing, data analysis, and report preparation. Interns gain hands-on experience with geotechnical investigations, foundation assessments, and slope stability analysis. Keller is looking for a Co-Op Intern who can start work in the Fall 2026 or Spring 2027. Candidates can be based in Cleveland, Columbus, Pittsburg or Detroit area and will report to our Cleveland, Ohio office.
ResponsibilitiesThe Keller Co-Op program is focused on training and developing entry level students interested in the construction industry. We currently are offering both engineering and construction management positions. We look to retain Co-Op students for multiple semesters as they grow and develop the necessary skills to succeed in the Geotechnical market with the goal to transition Co-Op students into full time employment.
New employees will spend time in the field to get a firsthand understanding and experience in the types of services and construction Keller provides. Co-Ops will then transition into an office roll designed to develop engineering, estimating and sales skills.
