What kinds of projects and tasks can a Geotechnical EIT expect to work on during their first year?

As a Geotechnical EIT (Engineer-in-Training), you’ll typically assist with site investigations, soil and rock sampling, and laboratory testing in your first year. You’ll also help analyze geotechnical data to support the design of foundations, retaining walls, and other structures. Daily tasks often include preparing field reports, drafting technical documents, and collaborating with senior engineers on project planning. Geotechnical EITs frequently split their time between fieldwork and office-based analysis, gaining hands-on experience while learning industry best practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geotechnical EIT, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geotechnical EIT (Engineer-in-Training), a strong background in civil or geotechnical engineering, along with an EIT certification, is essential. Familiarity with geotechnical analysis software (such as GeoStudio or PLAXIS), soil testing methods, and CAD tools is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and teamwork help individuals stand out in field investigations and reporting. These competencies ensure accurate site assessments, effective collaboration, and safe, well-designed engineering solutions.

What is a Geotechnical EIT?

A Geotechnical EIT (Engineer-in-Training) is an entry-level engineer who works in the field of geotechnical engineering, typically after earning a degree in civil or geological engineering and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Geotechnical EITs assist with analyzing soil, rock, groundwater, and other earth materials to assess risks and design foundations for structures such as buildings, bridges, and roads. They support senior engineers by conducting field investigations, laboratory testing, and preparing technical reports. The EIT designation indicates that the individual is working towards becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
