Geotech Engineer information
What is the difference between Geotech Engineer vs Civil Engineer?
| Aspect | Geotech Engineer | Civil Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's in Geotechnical Engineering or Civil Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred | Bachelor's in Civil Engineering, PE license often required |
| Work Environment | Field sites, laboratories, design offices | Construction sites, design offices, urban planning |
| Industry Usage | Specializes in soil, rock, foundation analysis, and ground stability | Designs and supervises infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, buildings |
Both roles require a background in civil engineering principles, but Geotech Engineers focus on ground conditions and foundation stability, while Civil Engineers oversee broader infrastructure projects. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Job description
The Great Bear project is a development-stage asset located in the renowned and prolific Red Lake mining district, and represents one of the most exciting recent gold discoveries globally. The project has excellent potential to become a top-tier deposit that could support a large, long-life mine complex. Kinross’ comprehensive exploration and development program will aim to support the vision of a quality, high-grade, open-pit mine and a longer-term, sizeable underground mine.
Reporting to the Advanced Exploration Manager, the Geotech Engineer Superintendent is responsible for leading all geotechnical engineering activities supporting the safe planning, design, construction, and future operation of the Great Bear Advanced Exploration (AEX) underground mine.
Working closely with Mine Engineering, Geology, Hydrogeology, Construction, Site Services, Engineering Consultants, and the selected underground mining contractor, this position provides technical leadership in ground control, rock mechanics, excavation design, geotechnical monitoring, groundwater interaction, and operational risk management.
The Geotech Engineer Superintendent is responsible for developing geotechnical standards, establishing monitoring programs, managing geotechnical risk, and ensuring that underground development progresses safely and efficiently while supporting operational readiness for the Great Bear project.
- Provide technical leadership for all underground geotechnical engineering activities supporting the Great Bear AEX Project.
- Lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP).
- Develop, implement, and maintain the underground Ground Support QA/QC Program.
- Review and optimize ground support standards based on observed rock mass behavior and field performance.
- Provide geotechnical support for portal development, twin decline advancement, and underground infrastructure installations.
- Review excavation performance and recommend modifications to ground support standards based on changing ground conditions.
- Participate in daily, weekly, and monthly planning meetings with Mine Engineering, Construction, Operations, and the underground mining contractor.
- Work closely with Mine Planning to ensure excavation sequencing considers geotechnical constraints and opportunities.
- Review mine designs and excavation layouts to ensure long-term ground stability and operational safety.
- Develop, review, and interpret numerical modelling analyses to support excavation design, ground support optimization, mining sequence evaluation, pillar design, and long-term underground stability.
- Develop ground support designs for declines, crosscuts, intersections, pump stations, crusher chambers, ventilation raises, and other underground excavations.
- Lead geotechnical risk assessments for underground development and future production infrastructure.
- Develop Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) for geotechnical hazards.
- Monitor excavation performance and provide recommendations to reduce operational risk.
- Lead investigations into ground falls, support failures, abnormal ground behaviour, and geotechnical incidents.
- Develop rehabilitation strategies for deteriorating underground excavations.
- Design and manage underground instrumentation programs including:
- Multi-point borehole extensometers (MPBX)
- Convergence monitoring
- Prism monitoring
- Seismic monitoring systems
- Ground movement monitoring
- Surface slope monitoring where applicable
- Coordinate collection, interpretation, and reporting of geotechnical monitoring data.
- Integrate geotechnical and hydrogeological information into mine planning activities.
- Work closely with Hydrogeology and Water Management teams to assess groundwater impacts on underground development.
- Develop geotechnical and groundwater risk mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate with Engineering Consultants to review mine design, excavation stability, and support recommendations.
- Provide technical review of engineering deliverables relating to underground excavation stability.
- Participate in scope development, tender evaluations, and contractor selection for geotechnical related work packages.
- Review contractor compliance with ground support standards and QA/QC requirements.
- Develop underground geotechnical procedures, inspection standards, and engineering guidelines.
- Mentor junior engineers, EITs, and technical personnel.
- Provide technical training for supervisors and operations personnel on geotechnical hazards and ground control practices.
- Evaluate new geotechnical technologies, monitoring systems and support products that improve safety, productivity, and cost performance.
- Prepare technical reports, recommendations, and presentations for Project Leadership and Senior Management.
- Participate in internal and external audits and implement corrective actions where required.
- Support development of Kinross operational readiness for the future Great Bear Mine through knowledge transfer, procedure development, and mentoring of site personnel.
- Foster innovative thinking and continuous improvement while maintaining the highest standards of safety and engineering excellence.
- Work in a healthy work environment with full support, cooperation, and commitment to satisfy our operation’s goal of being accident-free.
- Support a work environment that is aligned with Kinross’ Safeground principles.
- Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements.
- Adhere to all relevant Great Bear policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's Degree in Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline. A minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible geotechnical engineering experience in underground hard rock mining.
Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario or eligible for registration.
Experience supporting underground mine development from project through operations is considered a significant asset and experience managing engineering consultants and contractors is highly desirable.
- Extensive knowledge of underground rock mechanics and ground control.
- Strong understanding of underground excavation design and stability.
- Experience with rock mass characterization systems.
- Experience developing Ground Control Management Plans and Ground Support QA/QC programs.
