Geospatial Research Assistant information

What is a geospatial research assistant?

Geospatial research assistants are professionals who support research projects by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting spatial data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related technologies. They assist with tasks such as data gathering from maps, satellite imagery, GPS, and other sources, and help create visualizations and reports that inform decision-making in fields like environmental science, urban planning, and public health. Their work is critical for projects that depend on understanding the relationships and patterns within geographic data.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geospatial research assistant?

A Geospatial Research Assistant should possess strong analytical skills, spatial reasoning, and a background in geography or environmental science, typically supported by a relevant bachelor's degree. Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS or QGIS, data visualization tools, and possibly certifications in geospatial technologies are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help individuals excel when working with complex datasets and interdisciplinary teams. These skills ensure accurate data analysis, clear reporting, and valuable contributions to research projects that rely on spatial information.

What are some common challenges faced by geospatial research assistants when working with large spatial datasets?

Geospatial Research Assistants often encounter challenges related to managing and processing large volumes of spatial data from various sources. These challenges include ensuring data accuracy, handling data format compatibility, and optimizing data processing workflows to avoid slowdowns. Additionally, they may need to troubleshoot software or scripting issues, especially when automating repetitive tasks or integrating datasets. Effective collaboration with team members and clear documentation are essential to overcoming these hurdles and ensuring project success.

With 25 years of trusted execution, we deliver reliable, affordable energy through a diverse portfolio that includes natural gas, solar, land-based wind, energy storage, transmission, and domestic manufacturing. Headquartered in Chicago, we develop, own, and operate large scale projects that power communities and support the energy future.

This position will be open for application for at least 3 calendar days from the posting date. This position will remain open for application based on business need, which may be before or after the 3-day posting window.

Job Description

Position Overview

Invenergy is seeking a Geospatial Scientist to support the development of thermal energy projects through geospatial analysis, site evaluation, routing and siting assessments, and technical research. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Routing & Siting, this role will partner closely with engineering, development, permitting, and project teams to identify opportunities, constraints, and risks throughout the project lifecycle. The ideal candidate combines strong GIS and analytical capabilities with a curiosity for learning, a problem-solving mindset, and the ability to communicate technical findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

Geospatial Analysis & Site Evaluation

  • Conduct geospatial analyses to support project development, routing, siting, and due diligence activities.

  • Assess environmental, physical, permitting, and operational constraints that may impact project development and execution.

  • Utilize GIS tools and spatial datasets to identify project opportunities, risks, and potential fatal flaws.

  • Analyze raster datasets, geophysical information, and other technical data to support project evaluations.

  • Develop maps, GIS products, technical memorandums, and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations.

Cross-Functional Project Support

  • Collaborate with engineering, development, permitting, and project management teams throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Support site layout development and optimization of project infrastructure and equipment placement.

  • Monitor project progress and communicate risks, recommendations, and key findings to stakeholders and management.

  • Support preparation of technical documentation, RFPs, RFIs, scopes of work, and contractor deliverables.

Data Management & Process Improvement

  • Maintain geospatial data quality, governance, and documentation standards.

  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, including evaluation of new tools, technologies, and workflows.

  • Assist with project execution through research, documentation, data organization, and coordination across project teams.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Geography, Cartography, Geology, Environmental Science, GIS, or a related field.

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in geospatial analysis, engineering, environmental planning, or related disciplines.

  • Experience working with ESRI products, including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Portal, and ArcMap.

  • Ability to perform spatial analyses and interpret environmental, technical, and geophysical datasets.

  • Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience working effectively across multiple stakeholders and disciplines.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

  • Ability to travel occasionally as business needs require.

  • Eligible to work in the United States without the need for employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting thermal, renewable energy, infrastructure, transmission, or other large-scale development projects.

  • Experience working with raster datasets and geophysical data products.

  • Familiarity with routing, siting, permitting, or project development processes.

  • Experience with Python, GIS automation, or workflow optimization tools.
