POSITION SPECIFICS
We are looking for a highly motivated Signal Processing Engineer to join the Advanced Phenomenology Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. You will assist our research efforts to develop novel sensing and estimation strategies that facilitate data-driven decision support. Under the mentorship of our R&D staff, you will utilize state-of-the-art tools in machine vision, UxV autonomy, and data processing. Your work will support a unique problem area that have applications in defense, manufacturing, law enforcement, security, and disaster relief. Our highly collaborative team is comprised of adaptable, curious, creative, lateral thinkers with both traditional and non-traditional backgrounds and multidisciplinary points-of-view. We offer opportunities to grow, explore, and experience multiple roles, and we encourage team members to pursue higher degrees and certifications in their field of study.

You will:
  • Support the research and testing of novel collection methods and strategies using multiple networked asset and evaluate signal processing strategies and UxV autonomy in sea, ground, air and space environments
  • Develop data architectures and pipelines for test and evaluation, document findings and recommend system modifications where needed
  • Research data fusion and estimation frameworks for sensor networks, i.e. Kalman filter approaches
  • Collaborate with geospatial imagery analysts and/or UxV operators to understand and automate data processing workflows and implementations
  • Collaborate with computer vision algorithm developers and data scientists to support the integration of machine learning algorithms
  • Derive physics-based and mathematical models where appropriate for validation and verification
  • Apply scientific method and best practices across multiple disciplines to advance data and geospatial sciences and develop data analytics through systematic experimentation
  • Grow career and capabilities, plan and conduct applied research, provide technical guidance and oversight, contribute to large research efforts, report results, foster trusted relationships with sponsors, and advise on new and evolving technology and techniques
  • Engage in research efforts ranging from proof-of-concept through integrated production

Required skills/experience areas include:
  • Technical skills and training in a field directly applicable or highly related to Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or Geospatial Sciences
  • Interest in the design and development of data fusion and estimation frameworks using heterogenous sensor network configurations
  • Computer programming in one or more of the following: Python, C++, MATLAB, Java
  • Exposure to spatio-temporal data fusion, applicable database architectures and machine learning applications

Preferred skills/experience areas include:
  • Willingness to work within DoD/IC Analysis or Operational environments
  • Willingness and ability to obtain a government security clearance
