Title: Systems Engineer

Location: Remote / Hybrid (On site-visits to the DMV location as required by contract)

About this position: iWorks Corporation is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support the GEOTAM program for the U.S. Census Bureau. This program supports the modernization, enhancement, and sustainment of the Census Bureau's MAF/TIGER geospatial systems through application development, geospatial data management, and enterprise IT modernization initiatives.

The Systems Engineer will provide technical leadership across system architecture, application modernization, cloud migration, and operational sustainment efforts supporting mission-critical geospatial platforms used by the Decennial Census, American Community Survey, and other enterprise Census programs.

This role requires strong expertise in systems engineering, cloud technologies, geospatial systems, enterprise databases, and DevSecOps methodologies within complex federal IT environments. The ideal candidate will be capable of supporting full lifecycle engineering activities while collaborating across technical and program management teams.

* This position is contingent upon contract award anticipated in July 2026.

Salary Range: - $125K – $165K commensurate with the candidate's skills, experience, location, and qualifications.

On a day-to-day basis, you will:

  1. Provide technical leadership for the design, implementation, modernization, and sustainment of enterprise IT and geospatial systems
  2. Analyze business and mission requirements and translate them into scalable technical and architectural solutions
  3. Support system architecture efforts involving APIs, microservices, cloud-native technologies, and distributed applications
  4. Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain applications throughout the full software development lifecycle (SDLC)
  5. Support cloud migration and modernization initiatives across AWS, OCI, Azure, and hybrid cloud environments
  6. Manage and administer Oracle, PostgreSQL, and geospatial database environments across development and production systems
  7. Implement DevOps and DevSecOps processes including CI/CD pipelines, automation, infrastructure-as-code, and container orchestration
  8. Perform application testing, validation, defect management, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis
  9. Support system and application security through vulnerability assessments, monitoring, compliance activities, and threat mitigation
  10. Monitor system performance, availability, and operational health using enterprise monitoring and logging tools
  11. Develop and maintain technical documentation, system configurations, architecture diagrams, and operational procedures
  12. Collaborate with engineers, developers, architects, and program stakeholders to deliver mission-aligned solutions
  13. Support release management, change management, and continuous improvement initiatives

Required Education/Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of experience supporting enterprise IT systems engineering, application modernization, or infrastructure engineering efforts
  • Experience supporting federal government or large-scale enterprise environments
  • Experience within the geospatial industry or supporting geospatial systems and applications
  • Strong expertise in systems engineering, technical leadership, and enterprise architecture
  • Experience supporting full SDLC activities including design, development, testing, deployment, and sustainment
  • Experience with cloud platforms including AWS, AWS GovCloud, OCI, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
  • Experience with Oracle databases including Oracle 19c+, Oracle Spatial, and geospatial data management
  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Aurora, Amazon RedShift, or similar enterprise database technologies
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or EKS
  • Experience implementing DevOps/DevSecOps methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure automation tools such as GitLab and Terraform
  • Proficiency with scripting and programming languages such as Python, Java, Bash, PowerShell, SQL, or PL/SQL
  • Experience with enterprise Linux and Windows server environments
  • Experience supporting application security, vulnerability management, and continuous monitoring activities
  • Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, analytical, and communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a federal government clearance if required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications: Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP) certification
  • Experience supporting U.S. Census Bureau programs or large-scale federal geospatial modernization initiatives
  • Experience with Esri ArcGIS technologies, geospatial services, and spatial data platforms
  • Familiarity with WMS/WFS services, vector tile services, and enterprise GIS integrations
  • Experience with Agile, Scaled Agile, or SAFe delivery environments
  • Experience supporting cloud modernization and hybrid infrastructure transformation efforts
  • Familiarity with enterprise monitoring and security tools such as Splunk, AppDynamics, SolarWinds, Sentinel, and Microsoft Defender
  • Experience leading technical teams or overseeing complex modernization initiatives
