We are seeking a detail-oriented Geospatial Data Validation Intern to support utility mapping and asset data improvement initiatives. This internship provides hands-on experience working with GIS and enterprise asset data to improve the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of utility system records. The intern will collaborate with GIS, asset management, and operations teams to validate, clean, and maintain spatial and attribute data used for mapping and business processes.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • GIS Data Management & Mapping: Create, edit, and maintain GIS datasets and maps; produce digital and print maps for internal/external use.

  • Spatial Analysis: Perform geospatial analysis using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, QGIS) and geodatabases.

  • Data Collection & QA/QC: Collect, clean, and organize spatial and tabular data; support field data collection via GPS devices or mobile GIS apps; conduct quality assurance on GIS data.

This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Current student, Junior or higher

  • Enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related fields

  • Personal vehicle needed to travel to other worksites

  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify data discrepancies

  • Experience working with spreadsheets, databases, and data analysis tools

  • Familiarity with GIS software such as ArcGIS Pro, Smallworld, or similar platforms

  • Basic understanding of spatial data concepts and utility infrastructure is preferred

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills

  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team environment
