Geoscience Software Engineer information
What are some common challenges Geoscience Software Engineers face when integrating geological data into software solutions?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geoscience Software Engineer, and why are they important?
What is a Geoscience Software Engineer?
What is the difference between Geoscience Software Engineer vs Geoscientist?
| Aspect | Geoscience Software Engineer | Geoscientist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or Master's in Geoscience, Computer Science, or related field | Bachelor's or higher in Geoscience or Earth Sciences |
| Work Environment | Develops software tools for geoscience applications, often in tech or research firms | Conducts fieldwork, data analysis, and research in labs or on-site |
| Industry Usage | Used in tech companies, oil & gas, environmental consulting | Used in academia, research institutions, and environmental agencies |
While Geoscience Software Engineers focus on developing software solutions for geoscience problems, Geoscientists primarily conduct fieldwork and research to understand Earth's processes. Both roles require a strong foundation in geoscience, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

We attract and retain the best talent by investing in our employees and empowering them to develop themselves and their careers. Experience the challenges, rewards and opportunity of working for one of the world’s largest providers of products and services to the global energy industry.
We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Domain QA Performance Engineer with deep expertise in Landmark DecisionSpace Geosciences (DSG) applications to lead performance engineering and scalability validation across the DSG product portfolio. The ideal candidate will have more than 10 years of hands-on experience testing geoscience applications and possess strong knowledge of the upstream Oil & Gas domain, performance engineering methodologies, and automated testing using TestArchitect.
This role is responsible for designing, executing, analyzing, and optimizing performance tests across multiple DSG domains while collaborating closely with Development, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Customer Support, and Customer Account teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve customer-facing performance issues.
Key Responsibilities
Lead end-to-end performance engineering activities for the DecisionSpace Geosciences (DSG) product suite.
Design, develop, maintain, and execute performance, scalability, endurance, stress, and benchmark tests for DSG applications.
Validate application performance across the following functional areas:
- Geology
- Geophysics
- Velocity Modeling
- Dynamic Frameworks to Fill
- Scalable Earth Modeling
- Seismic Engine
- AHI
Develop realistic customer workflows and datasets that accurately represent production environments.
- Analyze application response times, throughput, resource utilization, and system bottlenecks.
- Work closely with software developers to identify root causes of performance issues and validate performance improvements.
- Partner with SRE teams to evaluate application behavior in cloud and enterprise deployments and recommend performance tuning opportunities.
- Collaborate with Customer Support and Customer Account teams to reproduce customer-reported performance issues, analyze production scenarios, and validate fixes.
- Develop and maintain automated performance test suites using TestArchitect.
- Build reusable automation frameworks for regression and performance validation.
- Execute performance regression testing for every release and ensure no degradation is introduced.
- Produce detailed performance reports, trend analyses, dashboards, and executive summaries.
- Participate in release readiness reviews and provide performance certification for software releases.
- Identify opportunities to improve testing processes, automation coverage, and engineering efficiency.
- Mentor junior QA and automation engineers on performance engineering best practices.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Geoscience, or a related technical discipline.
10+ years of software QA and performance engineering experience with deep domain knowledge of Landmark DecisionSpace Geosciences (DSG).
Extensive experience designing and executing:
- Performance testing
- Load testing
- Stress testing
- Scalability testing
- Endurance (oak) testing
- Performance regression testing
- Proven experience using TestArchitect for test automation and execution.
- Strong understanding of performance analysis methodologies and bottleneck identification.
- Experience analyzing application logs, system metrics, CPU, memory, storage, networking, and database performance.
- Ability to investigate complex software performance issues and provide actionable recommendations.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with cloud-based deployments (AWS, Azure, or hybrid environments).
- Experience using performance monitoring and observability tools such as New Relic, Dynatrace, Grafana, Prometheus, or similar platforms.
- Experience working with large geoscience datasets and enterprise customer environments.
- Understanding of software release management and DevOps practices.
