How much do geoscience data management jobs pay per hour?
What are the typical day-to-day responsibilities in a Geoscience Data Management position?
In a Geoscience Data Management role, you can expect to spend your days organizing, validating, and maintaining large sets of geoscientific data, including geological maps, survey results, and spatial datasets. You will frequently use specialized software to ensure data accuracy, integrate new information, and support geoscientists with data requests for ongoing projects. Collaboration with geologists, engineers, and IT teams is common, as you'll help translate technical data into actionable insights. This role also involves establishing data quality standards, troubleshooting issues, and occasionally assisting with data-driven reports or presentations for project stakeholders.
What is a Geoscience Data Management job?
A Geoscience Data Management job involves organizing, storing, and maintaining geoscience-related data for industries like oil and gas, environmental science, and mining. Professionals in this role ensure data accuracy, accessibility, and security while supporting geologists, geophysicists, and engineers in their analyses. They work with databases, GIS tools, and data integration systems to manage geological, geophysical, and geochemical datasets. Effective data management improves decision-making, enhances exploration success, and ensures regulatory compliance.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Geoscience Data Management position, and why are they important?
To thrive in Geoscience Data Management, you need a solid background in geosciences, data analysis, and database management, often supported by a relevant degree or certification in geology, environmental science, or information systems. Familiarity with technical tools such as GIS software, SQL databases, and data visualization platforms is highly valued, along with certifications like GISP (GIS Professional). Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this field. These skills ensure the accurate management, integration, and interpretation of complex geoscientific data critical to research and decision-making.

Job description
ROGII is a dynamic company revolutionizing the Oil & Gas industry with innovative software solutions. They are seeking a Geoscience Data Migration Specialist who will work closely with customers to understand their data workflows and help transition their data to cloud platforms effectively.
Responsibilities:
• Build relationships and earn trust
• Get to know the IT staff, data managers, DBAs, and geoscientists at our customer accounts, and build real working relationships with them.
• Spend time with customer teams to understand how they actually work. The teams, the processes, and the politics around their data.
• Be the person customers reach out to with questions about their data and moving to the cloud.
• Identify how each customer's geoscience workflows run, from how data comes in to how it gets interpreted and used.
• Catalog what data they have and how much of it — well headers, directional surveys, logs/LAS, formation tops, interpretation, production, and public/regulatory data.
• Dig into the on-prem customizations that aren't in any feature list (custom fields, scripts, integrations, naming conventions, the tribal knowledge) and figure out what does and doesn't carry over to a cloud database.
• Spot where customers depend on something our cloud platform doesn't do yet.
• Turn those gaps into prioritized requirements for product, with the reasoning and customer impact behind them.
• Work with the dev team to make sure what we build holds up against how customers work.
• Put together migration assessments for each account and a playbook we can reuse as we scale.
• Sort out how data gets mapped, transformed, and validated on the way to the cloud.
• Call out risks early so migrations don't stall once they're underway.
• Be the link between sales, customer success, and product, and make sure what customers need gets back to the people building the product.
• Help the sales and account teams talk about migration with confidence.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Strong IT and database background: SQL, relational data modeling, and hands-on experience with on-prem databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle), including data migration and ETL.
• Solid working knowledge of upstream oil & gas / geoscience data — well data, logs, interpretation data, and/or public and regulatory data.
• A proven ability to build relationships and trust with both deeply technical audiences (IT, DBAs) and end users (geoscientists, geotechs).
• A genuine self-starter who operates with autonomy, sets their own priorities, and drives outcomes without being managed task to task.
• Excellent communication skills. Be able to move fluidly between a technical migration conversation and a business or end-user one.
• Willingness and ability to travel to customer sites.
