What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Geological Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geological Engineer, you need a solid understanding of geology, mathematics, and engineering principles, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in geological or geotechnical engineering. Proficiency with GIS software, modeling tools like AutoCAD and GeoStudio, and familiarity with field-testing equipment are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills are crucial for designing safe and sustainable projects, interpreting complex data, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.

How do geological engineers typically collaborate with other professionals on large-scale projects?

Geological engineers often work closely with civil engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, and construction teams to ensure project success. Collaboration usually involves site assessments, data sharing, and joint problem-solving meetings to address issues such as soil stability, groundwater management, and environmental impact. Effective communication is essential, as geological engineers provide critical input during both the design and construction phases to mitigate geological risks and comply with regulations. This teamwork fosters a dynamic work environment and broadens professional expertise.

What is geological engineering?

Geological engineering is a field that combines principles of geology and engineering to solve problems related to the Earth and its resources. Geological engineers investigate the composition, structure, and processes of the Earth to assess risks, support construction projects, and find and manage resources like minerals, water, and fossil fuels. They play a vital role in designing foundations, tunnels, dams, and other structures to ensure safety and environmental sustainability. Their work also includes mitigating natural hazards such as landslides and earthquakes.

What is the difference between Geological Engineering vs Geotechnical Engineering?

AspectGeological EngineeringGeotechnical Engineering
FocusStudy of Earth's materials, processes, and hazards to inform engineering projectsDesign and analysis of soil and rock behavior for construction stability
Work EnvironmentField investigations, environmental assessments, and hazard mitigationLaboratory testing, site analysis, and foundation design
CredentialsBachelor's in Geological Engineering or Geology, often with PE licenseBachelor's in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering, often with PE license

Geological Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering share overlapping skills and credentials but differ in focus. Geological Engineering emphasizes understanding Earth's processes and hazards, while Geotechnical Engineering concentrates on soil and rock behavior for construction. Both roles are vital in the engineering industry and often collaborate on projects involving site stability and hazard assessment.

Job description

Make your mark leading complex remediation programs-and shape ERM's technical reputation in the Southeast. Step into a Technical Director role where you'll set the technical bar, drive strategy, and grow a portfolio of highimpact work across North Carolina, the broader Southeast, and beyond.

Why This Role Matters

ERM's Site Investigation and Remediation Services team in Raleigh/Charlotte, North Carolina is expanding. We're looking for a hands-on Technical Director, Engineer or Geologist to elevate delivery excellence and help clients achieve confident, costeffective closure across a range of regulatory programs (CERCLA, RCRA, NC state programs, VRP/HSRA/Brownfield) and sectors (manufacturing, power, chemical, oil & gas, technology).

In this role, you will set the technical direction, mentor the next generation of consultants, strengthen ERM's brand through thought leadership, and cultivate long-term client partnerships-directly influencing growth, reputation, and service innovation.

What Your Impact Is

  • Technical leadership: Serve as the senior technical resource for site investigation, risk assessment, and remediation-owning quality, efficiency, and risk management across moderate to complex projects.

  • Client outcomes: Design pragmatic, costeffective remedial strategies and negotiate success with regulators-delivering measurable value and closure certainty.

  • Team development: Supervise and mentor junior staff, expand regional capability, and advance the career growth of the team.

  • Market presence: Enhance ERM's technical reputation through conference participation, presentations, and published papers/articles.

  • Growth & sales: Build pipelines with highgrowth, highvalue (HGHV) and key clients, prepare winning proposals, and contribute to top opportunities and revenue performance.

  • Operational excellence: Support strong scoping and delivery to minimize rework/writeoffs, meet billability/DSC targets, and command premium value within client MSAs.

  • Safety authority: Exercise stopwork authority whenever conditions present danger-empowered to act immediately to protect people and the public.

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, geology, environmental science or related field (Master's or higher preferred).

  • PE or PG required for engineers/geologists.

  • 8+ years of progressive project management and technical experience for moderate to complex CERCLA/RCRA and state program projects.

  • Proven field and technical background (sampling; drilling; well installation; soil/groundwater/LNAPL/DNAPL assessment; vapor intrusion; HRSC methods).

  • Strong written/verbal communication, organization, analytical skills; collaborative team player.

  • 40hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification.

  • Driver's License Required: This position requires a valid driver's license and/or the ability to operate a company vehicle due to the nature of job duties, which include frequent travel to various client locations across a large geographical area.

  • Commitment to safety and adherence to established Health & Safety protocols.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of the North Carolina REC program and ability to register as an RSM.

  • Experience supporting/leading Georgia HSRA, VRP, and Brownfield projects.

  • Familiarity with environmental data management tools (e.g., EQuIS).

  • Record of publishing technical work and presenting at industry events.

  • Experience leading projects across multiple sectors (manufacturing, power, chemical, oil & gas, technology) and geographies (Southeast, other U.S. states, international).

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan & coordinate complex projects: Lead site investigation, utility location/clearance, risk assessment, and remediation of soil, groundwater, and sediments-navigating nuanced technical and regulatory issues.

  • Lead field programs: Oversee sampling, drilling, well installation, VI assessments, and highresolution site characterization (e.g., passive soil gas surveys, MIP, Waterloo Profiler); manage remedial construction and O&M.

  • Own data & direction: Review/interpret environmental data; manage QA/QC; develop conceptual site models; identify data gaps; prepare/peerreview work plans, reports, scopes, schedules, costs, and H&S plans under RCRA/CERCLA and state programs.

  • Advance digital & efficiency: Utilize new technologies (efield data collection, management, reporting) to improve quality and delivery speed.

  • Design remedies that work: Evaluate remedial alternatives; lead bench/pilot testing for soil, groundwater, and sediment remedies (traditional/innovative technologies); monitor and optimize performance for maximum client value.

  • Regulatory strategy: Develop costeffective closure strategies and negotiate outcomes with agencies; support/lead GA HSRA, VRP, Brownfield engagements.

  • Grow the business: Prepare compelling proposals, nurture existing relationships, convert identified leads, and generate repeat business with HGHV/key clients.

  • Elevate ERM's brand: Publish technical insights; present at key technical/client events; build strong, collaborative relationships with ERM colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.

  • Governance & accountability: Adhere to project technical direction and risk management per PIC governance; operate with significant latitude while collaborating with Partner sponsors (e.g., for conferences/publications).
