Responsibilities

Summary:The Assessment Counselor is responsible for administering screening and assessment services to inmates during the intake process by interviewing inmates, reviewing case files, and testing scores and preparing assessment reports for determining inmate appropriateness for substance abuse treatment. This staff position assesses referred participants to determine their criminogenic risk/needs and readiness for treatment. They communicate regularly with the GEO program management and supervising agency personnel regarding participant progress, needs, concerns, and issues.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Assessment Counselor administers, scores, and interprets a variety of assessments with inmates.
  • Interviews participants to collect additional data not covered by the specified assessment tools.
  • The Assessment Counselor prepares written reports based on results of assessment and testing tools.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate's degree in Human Services or Substance Abuse.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, other staff, and leadership personnel and react quickly and appropriately in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
