What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a geo consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Geo Consultant, you need expertise in geology, geotechnical analysis, and environmental assessment, typically supported by a degree in geology, earth sciences, or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, modeling tools, and relevant certifications like GIT (Geologist in Training) are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting data and advising clients. These skills ensure accurate project assessments, regulatory compliance, and effective client solutions in complex geoscience environments.

What are some common challenges geo consultants face when working on environmental site assessments?

Geo Consultants often encounter challenges such as incomplete site histories, complex subsurface conditions, and varying regulatory requirements across regions. Addressing these issues requires strong research skills, adaptability, and frequent collaboration with environmental engineers, project managers, and regulatory agencies. Successful consultants proactively communicate findings and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring compliance and project success.

What is a geo consultant?

Geo Consultants, or geotechnical consultants, are professionals who provide expertise in geology, geotechnical engineering, and environmental science to support construction, mining, and land development projects. They assess ground conditions, analyze soil and rock properties, and offer recommendations for safe and sustainable project design. Their work helps ensure that structures are built on stable ground and that environmental regulations are met. Geo Consultants often work with architects, engineers, and developers to identify potential risks and solutions related to the earth materials involved in a project.

What does a geo consultant do?

A geo consultant analyzes geological data to assess land stability, resource potential, and environmental impact for construction, mining, or environmental projects. They use tools like GIS software and field surveys to provide expert recommendations and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Job Description
As an SEO / GEO Director within the Earned Media team, you will lead both organic search and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) strategy for enterprise clients across Jellyfish and the Brandtech Group. The role combines dedicated client SEO leadership with hands-on GEO strategy and implementation, operating alongside Jellyfish's broader SEO and GEO practice to deliver actionable insights based on client goals and aspirations, and bring them to light through a unified strategic approach. You will manage SEO/GEO roadmaps, mentor teams, and promote strategic innovation, ensuring our Earned Media capability continues to deliver industry-leading results. No matter what you call it, GEO, AEO, AI Search, we're interested in leaders in the space for this role who have experience leading teams and execution to grow and influence a client's narrative, visibility and sentiment in LLM outputs.
We're looking for a candidate with direct, hands-on experience delivering SEO and GEO outcomes for brands, including visibility & perception analysis across the varying LLMs, and measurable improvements to how brands are represented across platforms such as traditional search platforms (Google, Bing, etc), and the new AI Search landscape including but not limited to: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. With GEO performance being equally shaped by owned content, earned media, social activity, paid media, and affiliate/publisher partnerships, this role also functions as a strategic connector across channels, rather than operating within a traditional SEO remit alone.
This is a hybrid role based out of our NYC office. The salary range for this position is between $130,000-150,000 USD, annually, with the final offer dependent on experience.
Your responsibilities will include:
Client SEO / GEO / AEO Leadership
  • Define and own SEO strategies across main client accounts, ensuring the best technical, content, and authority-building approaches.
  • Own GEO strategy and execution for your assigned client(s), including LLM visibility auditing, AI citation/share-of-voice tracking, and structured content strategies aimed at improving brand presence in generative engine outputs
  • Translate SEO/GEO performance into business outcomes
  • Be the primary strategic consultant for clients, providing high-level insights and driving measurable growth.
  • Build and present GEO points of view, frameworks, and results narratives for your accounts' QBRs and planning sessions
  • Collaborate with Content, Digital PR, and Paid Media teams to provide an integrated Earned Media strategy.
  • Advise your clients on how content architecture, schema, and structured data decisions affect AI retrieval and citation
  • Own and evolve SEO & GEO measurement frameworks, using tools such as GA4, Adobe Analytics, Google Search Console, Looker Studio, and enterprise SEO platforms.
  • Build and Implement new SEO & GEO innovations, such as AI-driven content optimization, automation, and data science applications.
  • Oversee the operational delivery of Earned Media programs, ensuring seamless execution across technical, content, and off-site initiatives.
  • Take ownership of client performance KPIs, ensuring that teams deliver against agreed goals while maintaining profitability.
  • Manage, mentor, and develop Senior SEO Managers and SEO Managers, ensuring professional growth and a strong talent pipeline within the Earned Media team.
  • Identify and address knowledge gaps within the team by implementing structured training programs, workshops, and peer-to-peer learning initiatives.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, algorithm updates, and emerging technologies, integrating them into our strategic approach.
  • Champion AI-driven automation, data-driven insights, and methodologies to enhance performance and efficiency.
  • Partner with Jellyfish's SEO and GEO practice lead and broader Earned Media team to stay aligned with agency-wide standards, tooling, and best practices
  • Apply a working knowledge of paid, earned content creation, PR, publishing, citation / brand mention creation, affiliate models and social mechanics to ensure GEO recommendations are informed and cross-functionally sound
  • Serve as a connector across channel teams, helping them understand how their work contributes to AI visibility outcomes

What You Bring
  • 8+ years in SEO, with demonstrable, hands-on GEO experience - not just conceptual familiarity - for at least 1 year.
  • Track record of measurable results from GEO initiatives (visibility, citation share, AI-driven traffic/conversion impact) that you can speak to specifically
  • Knowledge of technical SEO, structured data, JavaScript frameworks, and web performance optimization.
  • Advanced expertise in SEO analytics, automation, and reporting, with proficiency in GA4, Adobe Analytics, Looker Studio, and enterprise SEO platforms.
  • Ability to translate complex SEO insights into executive-level recommendations and strategic roadmaps.
  • Experience leading SEO for enterprise clients or complex in-house organizations; ecommerce and/or lead-gen brand experience strongly preferred
  • Working understanding of how social, paid media, and affiliate/publisher partnerships intersect with organic and generative search
  • Strong client-facing skills - comfortable leading strategy conversations, presenting to senior stakeholders, and defending recommendations
  • Familiarity with LLM visibility/tracking tools, structured data implementation, and modern SEO/content platforms
  • Organizational and project management skills, capable of handling multiple high-profile projects.
  • Agency experience a plus, but not required

Nice to Haves
  • Experience building or scaling a GEO practice/offering (internally or at a previous agency)
  • Public speaking, writing, or thought leadership in the SEO/GEO space
  • Experience with enterprise CMS/content platforms
