Job description

Genetic Visions-ST “GVI” is an advanced genomic and genetic services division of STgenetics™, a worldwide leader in livestock genetics, biotechnology and reproductive services for cattle, horses, deer and swine. GVI provides state of the art genomic and genetic profile services for bovine, swine and other livestock producers to identify genomic potential, gene markers and specific genes that influence economically important production traits, animal health and viability while aiding producers in animal selection in breeding programs. STgenetics is the most progressive livestock genetics company in the world and provides global commercial services that include sex-sorted sperm and genetic and genomic-based livestock embryo production for elite male and female production and development.
Position Description
The Lab Technician utilizes a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques and experience with molecular biology techniques to perform DNA genotyping. The Lab Technician will be performing steps required to extract DNA from incoming samples and utilize that DNA on a variety of platforms including, but not limited to, Illumina and Affymetrix microarrays and traditional PCR assays to produce genotypes. This position will utilize robotics to carry out some of the steps in the processes. The Lab Technician may be assigned independent projects and might participate in the creation of special projects.
ROLES amp; RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Catalog samples, compile sample information and assign tracking codes to samples.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks and/or data forms/records.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment in accordance with good practices.
  • Perform DNA extraction and quantification in preparation for various molecular biology techniques.
  • Assist with microarray techniques for genotyping samples.
  • Provide support for SNP genotyping assays and assist with genotyping analysis.
  • Assist with communication of results and data to customers and corporate staff.
  • Prepare general laboratory stock solutions and materials.
  • Comply with lab safety policies at all times.
  • Use various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, email, internet, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
  • Exhibit proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and/or biological agents in the workplace.
  • Monitor inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Identifies and Participates in Continuous Improvement initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION amp; QUALIFICATIONS
  • Preferred associate’s or bachelor’s degree in molecular biology, biotechnology or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory setting
