What do genetic assistants do?

Genetic assistants support healthcare professionals by collecting patient information, preparing family histories, and explaining genetic testing procedures. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Genetics Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Genetics Assistant, you need a background in biology or genetics, attention to detail, and laboratory experience, typically supported by a relevant associate or bachelor's degree. Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), PCR machines, and genetic analysis software is commonly required. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate data handling, efficient laboratory workflows, and clear communication with scientists and healthcare professionals.

What are Genetics Assistants?

Genetics Assistants are professionals who support genetic counselors, clinical geneticists, and other healthcare providers with administrative, laboratory, and patient care tasks related to genetics. They help collect patient histories, organize genetic testing samples and documentation, and communicate information to patients and providers. Their role is essential in streamlining the workflow of genetics departments and improving patient care.

What careers can I do with genetics?

A genetics assistant typically works in laboratories or research settings, supporting genetic testing, data analysis, and sample processing.
