Job description

Overview

Virginia Cancer Specialists, an affiliate of McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, a leader in Cancer care, is seeking a Full Time Genetic Counselor. Join an established community cancer genetics program that includes a team of 2 Licensed and Certified Genetic Counselors, a Genetic Program Assistant, and a Medical Oncologist. In addition, our program is part of The US Oncology Network’s Genetic  Program which provides access to a national network of providers, education, and clinical resources, as well as research, speaking and local and national leadership opportunities.

SCOPE: Provide Hereditary Risk Assessment/Genetic Counseling to individuals with a personal and/or family history of cancer.  Collect and analyze family medical history and develop personalized risk assessments. Liaison with physicians and clinicians to coordinate patient laboratory and diagnostic testing, including test scheduling, insurance authorization, and results reporting. Maintain patient literature and educational information.  Assist with clinical research studies as they pertain to cancer genetics. Support and adhere to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Location: Provide care in the NW sector of Virginia Cancer Specialists range, including Fairfax, Fair Oaks and Reston locations.

-Provide genetic counseling to individuals with a personal diagnosis of cancer or family history of cancer, including information pertaining to risk factors, genetic concepts and inheritance patterns.

-Collect medical and family history from patients from a variety of sources including personal interviews, medical records review and family questionnaire software.

-Identify at-risk individuals that may benefit from genetic screening, testing and/or counseling.

-Calculate and report on personalized risk assessments to provide cancer risks for individuals and their families.

-Provide psychosocial support to patients throughout the process of genetic counseling and testing. 

-Coordinate genetic testing, including communication with specialty genetic testing laboratories

-Schedule laboratory and related diagnostic testing.  

-Counsel patients on their results by incorporating their personal and family history with thorough documentation.

-Collaborate with breast surgeons, medical oncologists, nurses, social workers and other clinicians and participate in the development of treatment plans as appropriate.

- Provide genetic services to cancer patients whose somatic tumor testing indicates the need for hereditary cancer evaluation/testing, as part of precision oncology.
- Assist in patient referral process and provide long term follow-up of patients as necessary.

-Provide education to VCS providers regarding current guidelines and recommendations for patients who qualify for Hereditary Risk Assessment.

-Support providers with provider-based testing model by triaging results and scheduling patients with Genetics who need further counseling and result interpretation.

-Participate in Cancer Committee Meetings by providing data on patients served on a quarterly basis.

-Participate as needed in Breast Cancer Tumor Board Meetings.

-Maintain patient educational resources and literature.

-Participate in weekly team meetings with Genetics Department by presenting cases and participating in discussion.

-Participate in monthly virtual education meeting and case conference with the US Oncology Genetics Program.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Medical Genetics/Counseling including clinical experience from an accredited genetics counseling training program with 2-5 years of clinical experience, oncology preferred. New graduates may apply. Board certified (or eligibility for certification) from the American Board of Medical Genetics.
