Lead Engineering and Energy Solutions Operations for a Growing Engineering and Sustainability Solutions Company
Global Facility Solutions (GFS) is seeking a General Manager of Operations to serve as a key operational leader within our organization and act as a strategic partner to the President in managing day-to-day business operations.
This role is ideal for an experienced mechanical/HVAC industry leader who understands engineering teams, building systems, and technical project environments-but who may come from operations, facilities management, project management, or leadership roles within mechanical or engineering-focused organizations.
The General Manager of Engineering will oversee engineering operations, coordinate technical resources, support project execution, and ensure strong collaboration between engineering, field operations, and project management teams.
This position acts as a senior strategic partner to the President and engineering team leaders, providing leadership in operational planning, technical team management, and overall business growth.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Technical Team Leadership
  • Provide leadership and direction to the engineering and technical teams
  • Coordinate engineering resources to support project execution and field operations
  • Mentor engineers and technical professionals to ensure strong collaboration and performance
  • Manage engineering workloads, priorities, and staffing needs

Operational Leadership
  • Partner closely with the President and division business leaders to support day-to-day business operations
  • Help oversee operational planning, technical execution, and departmental coordination
  • Align engineering efforts with company goals and project demands
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflows, processes, and team efficiency

Project & Technical Oversight
  • Support mechanical and HVAC project execution across engineering and field teams
  • Ensure engineering deliverables support project timelines and client expectations
  • Assist with troubleshooting technical challenges across projects and service operations
  • Collaborate with project managers, field leaders, and technical specialists

Business & Financial Management
  • Participate in operational planning, budgeting, and resource allocation
  • Support financial performance of projects and engineering activities
  • Help evaluate operational efficiency and identify opportunities for improvement

Client & Business Support
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions when appropriate
  • Support proposal development and project planning initiatives
  • Strengthen relationships with internal teams, partners, and clients

Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 15 to 20+ years of leadership experience within a mechanical, HVAC, facilities management, or technical services environment

Strong understanding of commercial building systems, including:
  • Mechanical systems
  • HVAC systems
  • Electrical systems

Experience leading teams within organizations such as:
  • Mechanical contractors
  • HVAC service companies
  • Facilities management companies
  • Engineering or technical services firms
  • Commercial building operations organizations
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage technical teams while coordinating operations and projects

Preferred
  • Experience supervising engineers, project managers, or technical teams
  • Background in mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering operations, HVAC services, or facility engineering environments
  • Experience supporting engineering teams in construction, service, or project-based organizations
  • Exposure to operational planning, financial management, or business leadership

Note: A Professional Engineer (PE) license is not required for this role.

Columbia, Maryland (This position is based in the Columbia office with occasional travel to project sites as needed)
Compensation
Competitive compensation package including:
  • Base salary + performance bonus
  • Target total compensation $180,000 - $200,000+ depending on experience
