Job Summary

The General Merchandise Clerk ("GMC") is accountable for delivering G.O.A.T. (Greet, Observe, Assist, Thank) service to our customers. This position plays a key role in supporting multiple areas of store operations and delivering outstanding customer service; therefore requires a versatile and adaptable individual who can take on a variety of tasks as needed throughout the store. This role consists of front-end responsibilities, including bagging customer purchases, retrieving shopping carts, and helping maintain a smooth and efficient checkout process. In addition, the position involves other responsibilities such as stocking shelves, organizing displays, fulfilling e-commerce shopping orders for customers, and assisting with floral and cut fruit preparation and presentation.

Job Responsibilities

The GMC may be assigned to one (or more) of several departments/assignments within the store and responsibilities may shift based on the operational needs of the store.

  • Provide friendly, helpful service while maintaining a professional demeanor and enhancing the customer's shopping experience (G.O.A.T)
  • Assist with customer questions, locating products, product recommendations, and communicating out-of-stock issues or customer concerns to store management
  • Bag groceries carefully and efficiently, separating items properly; along with offering and helping customers with loading groceries to their vehicles
  • Ensure shopping carts are regularly gathered from the parking lot and organized at store entrances for customer use
  • Grocery: Open boxes to stock, and refill shelves, displays, and end caps with general merchandise items
  • Following CAO bread procedures for working and writing bread orders
  • Build and maintain GMC product displays following store planograms, seasonal guidelines, and store management
  • Bale cardboard regularly and maintain the backroom clean, organized, and free of clutter to ensure a safe and efficient work environment
  • Ensure correct signage and pricing is visible and accurate, including routine price changes
  • Keep aisles and display areas clean, safe, and free of hazards
  • Sweep floors, clean up spills, and remove trash as needed to ensure a clean and safe shopping environment
  • Ecommerce: Receive online orders, accurately locate and inspect items for damage, defects, or freshness before packing to meet customer expectations
  • Replace or report unavailable or damaged items promptly along with updating customers on substitutions or delays
  • Pack items properly to avoid damage during transport and label orders clearly for pickup
  • Communicate to store management regarding order progress or issues
  • Assist customers by carrying or escorting their completed orders from the store to their vehicles, ensuring a smooth and convenient pickup experience
  • Produce Responsibilities: Cut, prepare, package, label, and price fresh-cut produce items for sale to customer
  • Stock and rotate merchandise to maintain freshness and an attractive display
  • Monitor product temperatures and maintain proper storage conditions
  • Maintain logs and records of damaged and lost merchandise
  • Complete price changes and assist Produce Manager with monthly inventory counts
  • Floral: Open, price, and stock floral merchandise while keeping displays neat, attractive, and well-organized to draw customer interest
  • Monitor floral inventory for freshness and quality, removing wilted or damaged products promptly
  • Place point-of-sale signs, tags, and promotional materials for floral and GMC produce products including routine price updates
  • Support the Produce department by stocking and maintaining the salad wall and other GMC produce items
  • Operate all standard store equipmentsuch as hand trucks, box cutters, department equipment, etc. safely and efficiently by adhering to established safety protocols
  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth department operations and excellent customer experience
  • All other related duties as required and assigned including, but not limited, to courtesy clerk duties
Requirements / Qualifications

Must be at least 18 years of age

High school diploma is preferred but not required

A valid Food Handler / Health Card

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks and responsibilities

Friendly, helpful attitude with a focus on customer satisfaction and service at all time

Ability to work well within the team and follow direction with a good attitude

Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) with the ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with customers and teammates

Basic math and reading skills for handling pricing, labels, equipment, and inventory

Good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail

Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, for up to four to eight hours per day and lift packages and other items (up to 50 pounds)

Available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays

Must maintain a sense of integrity and adhere to all store policies and procedures, including safety standards and the collective bargaining agreement
