General Statement of Job
Under occasional supervision, performs electrical installations, maintenance and repairs in schools, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, specifications, schedules and standards.  Assists in supervising assigned crew members.  Reports to the Crew Leader or Supervisor of Maintenance Services as assigned.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:

• Assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
• Inspects electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
• Diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
• Assists in supervising the duties of assigned apprentices and tradesworkers. Supervisory duties include assigning, reviewing and planning work of others, and maintaining standards.  Offers advice and assistance as needed.
• Works from ladders, scaffolds, and lifts; assembles, installs, tests, and maintains electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
• Prepares sketches or follows blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment.
• Assists with obtaining prices for and ordering supplies required for projects.
• Responds as needed to after-hours emergency calls
• Assembles scaffolding up to 30 feet.
• Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports, including work orders, blueprints, specifications, accident reports, warehouse requests, etc.
• Operates and maintains a variety of equipment, such as a two-way radio, vehicle, air lift, sky hawk, ditch witch, back hoe, truck, auger, hydraulic bender, power tools, hand tools, diagnostic tools, etc.
• Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals, such as the immediate supervisor, co-workers, District administrators and staff, students, contractors, utility company personnel, sales representatives, etc.
• Complies with all federal laws, state statutes, Board policies, administrative rules, and directives.

 
Additional Duties:

• Provides assistance to other trades employees as required.
• Inspects work in progress and after completion for compliance with specifications and codes.
• Works with architects and engineers as requested to design new electrical installations.
• Performs related duties as required.

 
Minimum Education and Training
Requires a vocational diploma supplemented by four years of experience in electrical repair, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Must possess a valid state driver's license and be licensed as a Certified Electrician (Journeyman).
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Physical Requirements:
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment, including a two-way radio, vehicle, hand and power tools, etc.  Must be able to exert up to twenty pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Physical demands are in excess of those of sedentary work; work involves driving, walking or standing for periods of time, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, climbing, etc., and performing manual tasks.  Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to 100 pounds and work at heights of 25 - 90 feet.

Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
Interpersonal Communications:
Requires the ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information.  Includes giving assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants and receiving assignments and/or direction from supervisor.

Requires the ability to read a variety of codes, policies and procedures, equipment manuals, specifications, blueprints, etc. Requires the ability to prepare daily reports, logs, etc., with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.  Requires the ability to speak with and before others with clarity, voice control and confidence.

Requires the ability to apply rational systems to solve practical problems, and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists, and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.  Requires the ability to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.  Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
Motor Coordination:
Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using special machinery and to operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment.

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, tools, etc.  Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
Interpersonal Temperament:
Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines. The worker may be subject to danger or risk to a moderate degree.

Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).

Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Maintenance Services Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Electrician. Is knowledgeable in the codes, laws, ordinances, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.  Is able to help ensure departmental compliance with all laws and regulations through effective leadership. Has knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies.  Has knowledge of and skill in electrical maintenance, installation and repair theories and practices.  Is able to perform duties with extreme attention to detail and safety.  Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.  Has the ability to use independent judgment as needed in performing routine and non-routine tasks.  Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
