The Senior Mechanical Engineer, Customer Quality plays a critical role in ensuring customer satisfaction within the Commercial and Industrial Business Group. This position provides engineering expertise to resolve product quality issues, working cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and service teams. The role leverages Six Sigma methodologies and root cause analysis to identify issues, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous product improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead root cause investigations on product quality issues, partnering with cross-functional teams including quality, service, production, and design engineering

  • Design, develop, and execute diagnostic plans to identify and clearly define root causes of field and product issues

  • Implement corrective actions to resolve existing issues and prevent recurrence in future product designs

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on enhancing reliability, reducing field failures, and improving customer satisfaction

  • Support the Industrial Service team in resolving escalated customer issues requiring engineering expertise

  • Collaborate with Product Engineering and Manufacturing to incorporate field feedback and lessons learned into new product development and production processes

  • Utilise structured problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone, FMEA) to drive consistent and effective outcomes

  • Apply engineering tools such as FEA, CFD, and 3D modelling to support analysis and solution development

  • Mentor and support the development of less experienced engineers and contribute to knowledge sharing across the team

  • Travel occasionally to Generac facilities and customer sites to support investigations and resolution efforts

  • Act with a high degree of independence, taking ownership of complex problems, decisions, and solutions while influencing cross-functional outcomes

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline

  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in new product design and development, including knowledge of materials such as plastics, aluminium castings, and sheet metal

  • Strong problem-solving capabilities with demonstrated ability to resolve complex engineering issues using root cause methodologies (e.g., 8D, 5 Whys, FMEA)

  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally in a matrixed environment and lead aspects of project teams

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects with high accuracy, strong attention to detail, and effective prioritisation

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical information for diverse audiences

  • Experience with engineering tools and systems, including FEA, CFD, 3D modelling (ProE/SolidWorks), and ERP systems (e.g., SAP)

  • Knowledge of generator systems and liquid-cooled engine design and control principles

  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently, apply engineering knowledge to improve products and processes, and understand broader business impact
