Job description

Summary

The Generator Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of emergency standby power generation systems ranging from 10 kW to 3000 kW. This role supports mission-critical infrastructure by ensuring generators and associated equipment are fully operational and compliant with safety and performance standards. The position requires hands-on experience with multiple generator manufacturers, including Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, Generac, and Briggs & Stratton, as well as working knowledge of automatic transfer switches (ATS) and power distribution systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and corrective repairs on diesel and gaseous standby generators ranging from 10 kW to 3000 kW.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system issues using schematics, diagnostic tools, and manufacturer software.
  • Inspect, test, and maintain automatic transfer switches (ATS) and associated switchgear.
  • Conduct load bank testing, operational testing, and system commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoot engine systems, including fuel, cooling, air intake, exhaust, and lubrication systems.
  • Perform electrical troubleshooting, including battery systems, charging systems, control wiring, and output systems.
  • Interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer specifications for accurate repairs.
  • Maintain accurate service records, inspection reports, and maintenance logs in accordance with company or contract requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA (including NFPA 70 and NFPA 110), and site-specific safety standards.
  • Coordinate with facility managers and operations teams to schedule maintenance and minimize downtime.
  • Respond to emergency service calls and provide rapid troubleshooting and repair support.

Knowledge, Experience, and Skill Requirements

  • Working knowledge of diesel and natural gas/propane engine-driven generator systems.
  • Familiarity with major generator manufacturers: Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, Generac, and Briggs & Stratton.
  • Understanding of automatic transfer switches (ATS), paralleling systems, and basic power generation principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Experience with generator controllers (e.g., Deep Sea, ComAp, CAT EMCP, Cummins PowerCommand) is a major plus.
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, multimeters, and load testing equipment.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Basic computer skills for reporting, documentation, and diagnostic software use.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a field environment.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • 3–5 years of experience in generator maintenance, heavy equipment, or related mechanical/electrical field preferred.
  • Military or government facility maintenance experience is a plus.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., squat, bend, stoop, and kneel for short periods, climb a ladder, stand for long periods of time, and perform constant arm extensions.
  • Occasional exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where the likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
  • Work a modified schedule to monitor generators.
