What is a gene software developer?

Gene Software Developers are specialized software engineers who design, build, and maintain software tools and applications for genetic and genomic research. They often work with large-scale biological data, such as DNA sequences, and create programs to analyze, visualize, and interpret genetic information. Their work supports advancements in personalized medicine, biotechnology, and scientific research by enabling researchers to process and understand complex genetic data.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a gene software developer?

To thrive as a Gene Software Developer, you need a solid background in bioinformatics, programming (such as Python, R, or Java), and a relevant degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related field. Familiarity with genomic databases, next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis tools, and version control systems like Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you work collaboratively with researchers and interdisciplinary teams. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient software that advances genomic research and clinical applications.

How does a gene software developer typically collaborate with biologists and other scientists on interdisciplinary projects?

Gene Software Developers often work closely with biologists, geneticists, and data scientists to design and implement software tools for analyzing genetic data. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to understand scientific requirements, translating those into technical specifications, and providing support for data interpretation. These developers play a key role in bridging the gap between complex biological concepts and computational solutions, ensuring that software is both scientifically accurate and user-friendly for researchers. Open communication and adaptability are crucial, as project goals may evolve alongside scientific discoveries.

What is the difference between Gene Software Developer vs Bioinformatics Software Developer?

Job Title:

Software Engineer

Reporting To:

Software Engineering Manager

Work Schedule:

Onsite - Phoenix, AZ

Mission & Impact

Join a team that develops embedded software for flight spacecraft systems and single board computers (SBCs). You'll develop board support packages, bring up hardware, and create device drivers for new interfaces on VxWorks and other embedded platforms-from design through integration and verification.

Bring your strong C/C++ (and scripting) real-time embedded development and hands-on debugging skills, and apply your software engineering expertise alongside Moog-specific tools, platforms, and devices.

You do not need every preferred skill to apply; strong candidates typically meet ~80% and show willingness to learn.

What You'll Do

  • Develop embedded avionics software: implement and maintain C/C++ software on single board computers (SBCs) and real-time operating systems (VxWorks 6/7).
  • Board bring-up & low-level drivers: support SBC bring-up and develop/debug software drivers for serial interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART), Ethernet, and high-speed links (LVDS/differential pairs), including SpaceWire (PHY/MAC) and MIL-STD-1553 as applicable.
  • Integrate with hardware and systems: collaborate with electrical, systems, and test teams to integrate software with custom analog/digital I/O, watchdog timers, and processor peripherals; troubleshoot issues across HW/SW boundaries.
  • Verification & test: derive test requirements, create unit and regression tests, support integration testing, and debug anomalies using logs, telemetry, and lab equipment.
  • Technical reviews & program execution: participate in peer and code/design reviews; support major program reviews and required technical data deliverables.
  • Configuration management & release: use version control to manage branches and baselines, support software/document releases, and track work and defects in Jira (including bug triage).
  • Documentation: produce and maintain user guides, software design documentation, and release notes; contribute to formal document release processes.

Must Have Qualifications (Core)

  • 2+ years of professional embedded software development experience (aerospace/defense preferred).
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for real-time/embedded systems.
  • Experience with RTOS development and debugging.
  • BSP/device-driver experience.
  • Working knowledge of serial communications (SPI/I2C/UART) and debugging at the protocol level.
  • Experience with software troubleshooting and root-cause analysis across HW/SW interfaces.
  • Familiarity with the end-to-end software development process: requirements, design, implementation, peer review, unit testing, regression testing, configuration management, and release.
  • Experience using version control (Git/Perforce preferred) and issue tracking (e.g., Jira).
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation (user guides, design notes) and communicate effectively in peer-to-peer engineering settings.
  • U.S. person (due to export controlled work).

Nice to Have (We Will Train Where Needed)

  • VxWorks 6.x / 7.x experience; Wind River Workbench.
  • Experience with spacecraft/avionics SBCs and bring-up.
  • SpaceWire (PHY/MAC/cabling) and/or MIL-STD-1553 experience.
  • Static code analysis tools and secure coding practices.
  • Familiarity with Perforce, Bitbucket, and formal release/baseline processes.
  • Experience supporting formal program reviews (SRR/PDR/CDR/TRR) and deliverables.

Growth & Development

  • Structured onboarding with mentorship and exposure to multiple spacecraft programs.
  • Targeted training on Moog-specific architectures, tools, and program processes.
  • Clear technical progression toward lead embedded software roles and mentoring responsibilities.
