Job description

Job Description Summary
CES Approved
The Automation Engineer supports and improves robotic automation systems on advanced manufacturing lines. This hands-on role provides technical ownership of assigned FANUC and other robotic systems used to deburr ground surfaces, remove supports from additively manufactured hardware, and inspect airfoils. The engineer works with other manufacturing engineers, production, maintenance, quality, and equipment suppliers to troubleshoot issues, launch new systems, and deliver safe, capable processes. Work is prioritized using SQDC, in order: Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
  • Build in-depth knowledge and ownership of assigned robotic automation systems; modify robot programs, paths, and operating parameters as needed.
  • Provide hands-on production support and progress from basic issue resolution to advanced troubleshooting of robot, controls, tooling, equipment, and process issues.
  • Lead structured problem solving: use data and root-cause methods to implement permanent corrective actions and preventive controls that reduce recurring failure modes.
  • Support the installation, commissioning, integration, and launch of new robotic automation, controls, vision, tooling, and related manufacturing systems.
  • Improve process quality, repeatability, cycle time, and capability while supporting customer takt-time and quality expectations.
  • Collaborate directly with operators, technicians, manufacturing engineering, production, maintenance, quality, and equipment suppliers to resolve interruptions and improve system performance.
  • Support fixtures, tooling, end-of-arm tooling, standard work, operating procedures, technical documentation, and process training.
  • Provide occasional off-shift production support and maintain a safety-first, quality-focused, team-oriented approach.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field, or a high school diploma/GED with a minimum of four years of experience in a technical skill set.

Desired Characteristics
  • Problem solver: analytical-minded, proactive, and persistent; breaks down ambiguous problems, identifies root causes, and follows through on permanent solutions.
  • Communicator: explains technical information clearly, listens to operators and technical partners, and collaborates effectively across functions.
  • Motivated and hardworking: self-directed, dependable, eager to learn, and willing to take ownership in a hands-on manufacturing environment.
  • Robotics, automation, and manufacturing experience strongly preferred, including FANUC teach pendant or robot programming experience.
  • Experience with automated finishing, machine vision, PLCs, industrial controls, or automated process integration preferred.
  • Experience with hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with CAD, fixtures, tooling, end-of-arm tooling, engineering drawings, specifications, machining processes, Python, Lean, Six Sigma, or root-cause methods preferred.
  • Ability to work onsite in Auburn, Alabama, during standard day-shift hours; provide occasional off-shift support; and travel approximately 5-10%.
  • Ability to prioritize and make decisions using SQDC, with safety and quality taking precedence over delivery and cost.
  • Humble: respectful, receptive, agile, eager to learn
  • Transparent: shares critical information, speaks with candor, contributes constructively
  • Focused: quick learner, strategically prioritizes work, committed
  • Leadership ability: strong communicator, decision-maker, collaborative
  • Problem solver: analytical-minded, challenges existing processes, critical thinker
