What are the typical responsibilities of a Gazette editor and how do they collaborate with other departments?

A Gazette editor is primarily responsible for curating, editing, and publishing official notices, announcements, and public records. In this role, you'll work closely with government agencies, legal departments, and sometimes private organizations to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of published materials. Collaboration with design and production teams is also common to maintain formatting standards and deadlines. Attention to detail and effective communication are essential, as the Gazette often serves as an authoritative source for legal and public information.

What is a Gazette?

A gazette is an official publication that is typically issued by a government or authorized body to communicate legal notices, government orders, new laws, appointments, and other official information to the public. Gazettes serve as the formal medium through which important government decisions and notifications are made publicly accessible. They are often used for legal and administrative purposes, such as publishing new regulations, changes in statutes, or public tenders. The format and frequency of gazette publications can vary by country and jurisdiction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Gazette Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Gazette Editor, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, typically supported by a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with publishing software like Adobe InDesign, content management systems, and AP or Chicago Manual of Style guidelines is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are critical soft skills for managing deadlines and collaborating with contributors. These abilities ensure accurate, engaging, and timely publication of content, which is vital for maintaining the credibility and readership of the gazette.

Job description

Managing Editor-Billings Gazette

The Billings Gazette, Montana’s largest newspaper in the state’s largest city, is looking for a dynamic Managing Editor to lead its newsroom filled with some of the best reporters and photojournalists in a five-state radius.

One of the last true daily newspapers in the Rocky Mountain West, the Gazette needs a leader who’s ready to shepherd a talented newsroom with energy, creativity, and a passion for accountability storytelling. If you can rally a team, spark new ideas and help us deliver standout journalism across digital and print platforms, we want to meet you.

As our Managing Editor, you’ll set the tone for our coverage — from quick turn breaking news and ambitious enterprise reporting to data-driven pieces and features that reflect the Billings and wider Eastern Montana community and get people talking. You’ll guide daily story planning, shape long-term strategies, edit and coach reporters and streamline workflows. You should thrive in a busy newsroom, enjoy mentoring journalists, and be excited about evolving how local news is delivered.

We are a digital-forward, multimedia driven group. You’ll help make sure our online presence is fast, sharp, and indispensable, which includes managing important items like email newsletters and social media accounts.

This is a big job in one of Lee Enterprises’ biggest newsrooms. The Gazette plays an integral role in civic life across Eastern Montana, and we’re seeking a leader who believes deeply in the power of local journalism. You’ll help drive coverage that holds institutions accountable and builds trust across the region’s communities. Your leadership will directly influence how Montanans understand their city, their government, and one another. The Gazette’s local reporters and photographers already embrace that mission - it’s vital that you do as well.

Why Billings?

Billings is Montana’s largest city, known for its friendly vibe and endless places to explore. Hike the stunning Rimrocks, float the Yellowstone River, sample local breweries, catch live music downtown, or take weekend trips to places like Red Lodge, the Beartooth Mountains or Yellowstone National Park.

With a growing arts scene, year-round outdoor adventures, and a community that genuinely cares about local journalism, Billings is a fantastic place to live, work and lead.

Why join Lee?

Lee Enterprises offers competitive wages in a dynamic, interesting work environment with career growth opportunities.  We offer an extensive benefit program that can be personalized to your needs which includes medical, dental, vision, short and long-term disability, company provided life insurance and supplemental life insurance. In addition, we offer a 401K retirement plan with company match.  We also offer generous paid time off to allow flexibility to balance personal life and work.  This includes paid parental leave for new parents.

Lee Enterprises is a major subscription and advertising platform and a leading provider of local news and information, with daily newspapers, rapidly growing digital products and nearly 350 weekly and specialty publications serving 74 markets in 25 states. Year to date, Lee's newspapers have an average daily circulation of 1.0 million, and our legacy websites, including acquisitions, reach more than 34 million digital unique visitors.

Lee Enterprises is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and we participate in E-Verify. We are committed to attracting and retaining a workforce whose diversity reflects the communities we serve. Lee embraces change, and we recognize that we must create and maintain a culture of fervent inclusion. For more information about Lee, check us out at www.lee.net.
We are focused on building a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you are excited about this role but do not meet 100% of the qualifications above, we encourage you to apply at https://lee.net.careers and search for Billings. Be sure to include a resume and links to a portfolio or website and references.
