Job description

Role Overview
The Design Engineer plays a critical role in transitioning projects from virtual design concepts to fully engineered, constructable solutions. This position leads preconstruction design and BIM coordination efforts while ensuring accuracy, constructability, and code compliance.

This role requires close collaboration with operations, internal partners, and external stakeholders to deliver high-quality designs that support successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Engineering
Lead multiple projects through preconstruction design and coordination phases.
Develop and review design, coordination, and installation drawings in alignment with Gaylor Electric Best Practices.
Perform and evaluate electrical calculations, including (but not limited to) load, voltage drop, short circuit, and lighting studies.
Produce constructable, code-compliant design and coordination documents across electrical systems, including (but not limited to) power, lighting, systems, underground, site, and temporary power.
BIM & Coordination
Represent Gaylor Electric in BIM and coordination meetings with architects, engineers, and MEP trade partners.
Identify and resolve spatial, constructability, and installation challenges through 3D coordination.
Review BIM Execution Plans, scopes of work, specifications, and jurisdictional requirements for accuracy and compliance.
Project & Stakeholder Support
Provide design and BIM support to operations and field teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Coordinate with project managers, craft professionals, estimators, and purchasing, to align design intent with execution strategy.
Interface with clients, consultants, owners, and equipment vendors to resolve technical and design-related issues.
Attend and contribute to project meetings as needed.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
Mentor and train Virtual Design team members.
Support the development and implementation of new Best Practices and innovative workflows.
Ensure quality and productivity of all deliverables within the required time frames.
Maintain and expand technical expertise through ongoing learning and professional development.
Required Qualifications
2+ years of experience in a VDC-related role.
Strong proficiency in Revit (2+ years) and experience participating in 3D coordination.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, one-line diagrams, and panel schedules.
Solid understanding of electrical installation practices and constructability.
Proficiency with Autodesk tools including Revit, Navisworks, BIM 360, and Autodesk Construction Cloud/Forma.
Working knowledge of NEC with familiarity in IBC, IECC, and life safety codes.
Experience developing code-compliant, buildable design and coordination documents.
Positive, purposeful, and eager-to-learn mindset.
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years of relevant electrical industry experience.
Prior experience as an MEP Coordinator or Superintendent with an Electrical Contractor.
Active Journeyman's Electrical License in the applicable region.
