Job description

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
This seasonal role will implement and coordinate the Lighthouse Point Park gate during activities and programs as well as other park programs, as assigned. The work will require evening and weekend hours, depending on operations and assigned schedule. This position will be under the direct supervision of the Parks Administration.
The employee is responsible for working directly with assigned staff to conduct all seasonal gate operations, as well as focusing on customer service and communication. This role includes maintaining detailed records, scheduling and communicating with other staff, as well as daily work in outdoor park settings. Seasonal position, up to 40 hours per week, not to exceed 120 calendar days.
Hours of operation for Lighthouse Park are typically sunrise to sunset. As such, hours of work will vary, and shifts will include early mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collect and organize all Lighthouse Point Park vehicle permit fees, passes, and vessel permit processing, including training all Parks Seasonal Program Aide gate attendants on how to review required registration information, sell season passes, and all day-to-day functions of the park.
  • Prepares daily schedules for gate attendants, including collecting weekly time sheets for verification and transmittal to Parks Supervisors.
  • Communicates with all visitors to the park, including rules and regulations as well as all applicable permit requirements. Reviews with staff any park events at the Lighthouse and welcomes all visitors to the park.
  • Sets up equipment and materials needed for the seasonal vehicle sticker program.
  • Conducts administrative tasks such as processing vehicle park permit registration alongside Program Aide gate attendants, attendance and visitor tracking, and general record keeping.
  • Leads supervision of all Lighthouse Point Park gate activities and operations during peak season, which is mostly considered Memorial Day through Labor Day; however, not limited to that period.
  • Communicates well with visitors and program staff.
  • Assists with maintaining access, cleanliness, and orderliness of park gate areas and equipment.
  • Assists in choosing and purchasing of supplies and equipment needed for gate operation.
  • Takes inventory, maintains, and organizes supplies and equipment needed for gate operation.
  • Represents the department at all Lighthouse Point Park community events, meetings, and facilities.
  • Follows safety guidelines and protocols established by the department.
  • Performs related work as required.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • Recent high school graduate, college student, or recent college graduate.
  • Some experience (preferably at least one season or semester) in cashier and/or customer service
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Previous experience working with the public, comfortable with public speaking, and working with groups. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of cashiering procedures, including cash out and reconciliation.
  • Knowledge of local parks and related activities.
  • Experience with gate tools such as card readers, documentation sheets, timesheets, etc.
  • Experience with or knowledge of public park events and permits
  • Works well in a team environment with shared goals.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Works well with diverse groups interested in parks.
  • Ability to accurately enter program records and information into spreadsheets and word processing programs.
  • Effective planning, prioritization, and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, as programming will include evening and weekend hours.
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred) desired but not required.

SALARY, BARGAINING UNIT & TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
This is a General Fund, "Non Tested" position.
This seasonal position is not eligible to receive medical benefits, vacation pay, sick pay, holiday, union membership, or union contractual benefits. Any period of seasonal employment will not be construed in any way to mean probationary employment.
Employment Status and Limitations
  • Seasonal employment is limited to a maximum of 119 calendar days per appointment. Seasonal employees may work up to 40 hours per week during this period.
  • Returning seasonal employees are not eligible for reappointment to a seasonal position until one (1) year plus one (1) day has elapsed from the start date of their most recent seasonal appointment. Example: An employee whose seasonal appointment began on June 1, 2025 may not return to seasonal employment until June 2, 2026.
  • Seasonal employees may transition to part-time employment only after a minimum break in service of thirteen (13) consecutive weeks.
  • Part-time employees may transition to seasonal employment only after a minimum break in service of thirteen (13) consecutive weeks.
  • Individuals may not hold two concurrent positions with the City of New Haven and/or the Board of Education at the same time, except for ten (10)-month employees:
    • Current full-time ten (10)-month employees may work only during July and August in either a seasonal or part-time position.

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of: (1) a pre-employment background check, and (2) a pre-employment drug screening in accordance with the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy* for candidates aged 18 and up.
